: On his stunning new album, The Other Shoe The Music of Gregg :
:' Hill, Dease spotlights his commitment to exploring new ':

:' Other Shoe features ten adventurous new compositions from the ':
,: pen of Gregg Hill, who has published more than 150 pieces in :,
: four volumes since he began writing music seriously in 1984, at :

,: Two things are happening on this album, Dease explains. One :,
: is that my dream, both currently and when I was a young :
:' musician, is to be a torchbearer for my predecessors and ':
,: ancestors so that their contributions continue to mean :,
: something to people my age and younger. I absolutely adore being :
:' straight-ahead and mainstream in that sense. But being able to ':
,: stretch, to go wherever I want without boundaries or historical :,
: impositions, is also part of that lineage. Part of being :
:' straight-ahead is thinking of the future and carrying the ':

: In that endeavor he s joined by the acclaimed pianist Geoffrey :
:' Keezer, who plays on six tracks, as well as special guest ':
,: bassist Rodney Whitaker, who has recorded his own album of :,
: Hill s music. Keezer alternates with the multi-talented :
:' keyboardist Luther Allison, who played drums on Dease s 2016 ':
,: album Father Figure and piano on 2018 s Reaching Out. Luther :,
: has deep roots, Dease says. He goes all the way back and all :
:' the way forward you can tell he s listened to Tatum, Fats ':
,: Waller and Teddy Wilson. He can take things in very unusual :,

,: The remainder of the band are newcomers, though based on their :,
: accomplished playing won t stay that way for long. Bassist Liany :
:' Mateo has worked in bands led by both Dease and Keezer, as well ':

: World Music Masters Degree from Danilo P rez s Global Jazz :
:' Institute. On the somber Hello, Blues, she stands toe-to-toe ':

: The trombonist discovered his frontline partner, 29-year-old :
:' Toronto-based clarinetist Virginia MacDonald, through clips on ':
,: YouTube. It was like a lightning bolt, Dease recalls. I liked :,
: the subtlety of her attack; the notes resound like they do when :
:' the great clarinetists play, but she puts a certain caress on ':
,: the notes like the great saxophone players do. :,

: In drummer Colleen Clark, Dease found what Hill calls that :
:' cutting edge New York vibe. Dease adds, I ve been trying for ':
,: 15 years to find the right project to call her for. I wanted :,
: someone who wasn t super familiar with my playing, who could :
:' make bold decisions and take chances, and has a lot of ':
,: different techniques to draw upon good brush technique, great :,
: cymbal tone, a dynamic sense of contour and phrasing. :

:' Hill s compositions on The Other Shoe range from the sprightly, ':
,: Monk-angled opener Wake Up Call to the entrancing Scooter s :,
: Dream, which features the leader at his most eloquent and :
:' Keezer steering the song from the graceful to the thorny. Hill ':
,: channels Ellingtonian elegance, graced by Dease and MacDonald s :,
: interweaving lines, on Shorty s Tune, culminating in the :
:' cinematic intricacy of the nearly 15-minute title track. ':

,: Throughout the album, Dease and his bandmates find vivid :,
: inspiration in Hill s evocative writing. Having populated his :
:' past releases with his own strong compositions alongside ':
,: classic standards and tunes by some of jazz s most revered :,

:' filling The Other Shoe with the work of a single composer. ':

,: This is the first project I ve done of entirely someone else s :,
: compositions, Dease describes. I feel good about it because :
:' the songs are strong. Every composition has a clear path and a ':
,: point the bass line, or the harmonic sequence, or a signature :,
: in the rhythmic riff, or a syncopated thing that gives each :
:' song a unique identity. These elements make it fun to produce ':
,: and arrange the material, to connect my creative originality to :,
