The amazing Boxhead Ensemble were formed by guitarist
Michael Krassner in 1996 and since then have amassed a
number of releases, sifting through a host of
collaborators and receiving countless accolades for their
work in the process. Counting Will Oldham, Ken Vandermark
and memebers of Wilco and the Dirty Three among their
extended membership, the band are now up to their fourth
album with 'Nocturnes' and although they function as a
more stripped-down four piece for this recording (with
cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, pianist Jacob Kollar and
percussionist Frank Rosaly), it is arguably their finest
moment yet. Fans of avant-classical experimentalists
Clogs or post-rock royalty Godspeed You! Black Emperor
won't be strangers to the collision of moody guitar
textures and orchestral strings, but Boxhead Ensemble
inject something very different into their haunting
compositions. The music here is so blatantly visual and
so evocative of images many of us will have only come
across in the cinema, that a plethora of superlatives and
cliche's must surely only be round the corner. Take
'Nocturne 5' for example, a dark piece of Americana
reminiscent of Ry Cooder's seminal 'Paris, Texas'
soundtrack or 'Nocturne 1' which could easily rest up
against a Lynchian scene of hopeful romance, albeit with
darker connotations. By combining so many styles on
'Nocturnes' though, Krassner and his associates have come
up with an album that doesn't necessarily lend itself to
easy categorisation - they have successfully blended the
grandiose blackness of Godspeed, the digitally precise
piano experimentation of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto,
the menacing Americana of Ry Cooder and the evocative
widescreen leanings of Max Richter to create something
unique and intensely emotional, all underpinned by a
deep, effortless understanding of space and atmosphere.
It's unusual to get albums which flow so beautifully
while still covering so much ground as 'Nocturnes' -
Krassner has experimented with form and come out
unscathed - for that amongst many other things he must be
praised. An amazing album - essential purchase.
