         █░█    months spent sleepless, going to bed with the      █░█
         █░█    Tascam 4 Track. Recording intermittent bits and    █░█
         █░█    "Voices on the Satellite", words, simple sounds.   █░█
         █░█    Writer comes fashioned with a keyboard, guitar.    █░█
         █░█    Then a snare, a string, a tone, BeckÆs Sea         █░█
         █░█    Change, warm, bright, crisp, deliberate, pulled    █░█
         █░█    apart, and then more Beck, Neil Young, more        █░█
         █░█    whiskey. The idea of lyric, concept, threaded      █░█
         █░█    through the eye, haunted album. Grow a beard,      █░█
         █░█    hate her picture, fall in love, drive for hours,   █░█
         █░█    boredom, betrayalùall of this. The unpolished      █░█
         █░█    throat. Writer sounds gritty, spit-shined,         █░█
         █░█    endearingly clumsy where the sadness of the voice  █░█
         █░█    is tender: "IÆll sing forever about pain, and I    █░█
         █░█    wonÆt speak bad about your name, your sweet        █░█
         █░█    nameà"                                             █░█
         █░█                                                       █░█
         █░█    On the outskirts of San Diego, brothers Andy       █░█
         █░█    (vocals, guitars) and Jayme Ralph (guitars,        █░█
         █░█    synth) join Matthew Fredrich (drums) for hours in  █░█
         █░█    a dimly lit room, plugged into buzzing amps.       █░█
         █░█    Instruments and cords tangle on the hardwood       █░█
         █░█    floor. From the window, Tijuana Mountains scallop  █░█
         █░█    a blank sky.                                       █░█

         █░█    Writer carves ghosts out of songs so that the      █░█
         █░█    sounds are vanishing into one other, like a        █░█
         █░█    memory, repeating: "Cover your tracks. ItÆs the    █░█
