Sweet sounds û Underwater Sleeping Society!
Underwater Sleeping Society û also known as UwSSoc û is not a easy
band to categorize. One might call their music melodic indierock, folk
pop or art punk, but then again, it would never sound quite right.
UwSSoc has often been associated with the rising Finnish alternative
pop/rock scene, but the band is not musically nor mentally tied to any
certain genre.
More than anything, Underwater Sleeping Society is 6 people with very
different musical tastes. Reportedly, the only bands each member of
the group genuinely likes are Pink Floyd and The Flaming Lips.
Even though Helsinki has been Underwater Sleeping SocietyÆs hometown
for almost half a decade, the story of the band started in RiihimΣki û
which is a small town in Southern Finland û in 1999, when singer
-guitarist Okko asked Tomi (guitarist as well) to kick out some jams
with him. Briefly after that Jussi, a multi-instrumentalist from
neighbourtown HyvinkΣΣ joined the two to play bass guitar. In the
spring of 2000 the sound of UwSSoc was updated again, when JussiÆs old
ôgrunge friendö Olli joined the band to play keyboards.
UwSSoc showed a lot of potential even in the early days, but it wasnÆt
until late 2002, when the wheels really started rolling as drummer
Sampo joined the group. The line-up was finally perfect in the autumn
of 2004 when a tall civil engineer named M.O. T÷yli jumped in to play
sax, clarinet and a little synth mysteriously named ôNautilusö.
In July 2004 Underwater Sleeping Society recorded its first full
-length album ôFuture On A Plateö û in the living room of OlliÆs
parents house, amazingly in only 10 days. When the album was released
(December 2004) it received excellent reviews all over Finnish media
and quickly made UwSSoc one of the hottest newcomers in Finland. Prior
to the release of their debut album, the band had made friends with
"the wild boys of Savo" (Savo is an area in Eastern Finland), who had
recently started a record label called Siamese Sounds and a loose
community of bands called New Music Community (NMC). It turned out to
be natural that ôFuture On A Plateö was to be released in co-operation
with them. Since then UwSSoc has toured Finland (more than 100 gigs so
far) with the marvellous NMC bands Rubik and Kastor, spreading the
word about good music and ôthe atmosphere of loveö (nothing to do with
hippiedom though).
Underwater Sleeping Society released the ôLotus-epö late August 2006,
featuring the radio single ôSilence Teaches You How To Singö. The song
peaked at number 2 on the Radio Helsinki most played list and spent
almost a month in the top 3. During autumn 2006 the band played a lot
of gigs in Finland, many of those with Magenta Skycode, and it seemed
that the crowds were enjoying the gigs very well indeed, being noisier
than ever.
UwSSocÆs much-expected second album All Other Lights Go Out will see
the daylight early 2007. AOLGO was recorded and mixed by Aku Cppo and
produced by UwSSoc, Aku Cppo and Asko KerΣnen of 22-Pistepirkko. The
bandÆs old trustee Henri ôHippoö Ohvo also played a crucial role in
the making of the album, which was recorded in the magical atmosphere
of HΣstholmen cottage in Meri-Rastila, East Helsinki.
All other lights are out and the journey has just began...
