Release Notes:
Be Still Please that comes with three bonus tracks
in the European edition and is an emotional and
passionate tour de force. Portastatic, conceived as
a side project and an outlet for Mac's personal
expression, due to circumstance, or decisions made,
became the main vessel for his prolific creativity,
his most intimate project. This is the inevitable
development of Superchunk, from whom he inherited a
sound, a style and an approach, which at the end of
the day are characteristic, representative and
integral elements of the man himself, McCaughan. In
Be Still Please, there are female backing vocals
(Laura Cantrell and Annie Hayden) and an overdubbed
string section that both provides atmosphere and an
extra layer of emotion as well as taking the place
of guitars at times. Most noticeably, while the
songs themselves are less guitar-based, Mac
unleashes his guitar soloing skills on many of the
them, sounding like a pint-sized cross between J
Mascis and Neil Young, especially on the rousing
finish of "You Blanks". Add these fantastic updates
to an already winning formula and you get an album
that should be raved about and loved by blogs, TV
networks, indie kids and the general public
worldwide. Will it? Doubtfully. But for those who
are in the know, Be Still Please is another hidden
treasure from one of the truly important bands, and
persons, in pop music today.
