Ben Westbeech makes his very own kind of quirky,
rough around the edges soul music. It's not easy
to categorise, but it's what happens when a kid
who was classically trained til aged 18 in cello,
voice and piano grows up and gets into hip hop,
dance music and sample-based beats. Whatever you
call it, 2am one rainy night outside a club in
Bristol, Gilles was sitting in his car, with a
friend pestering to play him a new demo. It was
one of those 'you've really got to here this!'
scenarios û except this time it was true, the
artist was Ben, and he was signed up a few weeks
later. There's something fresh and unusual about
BenÆs productions and at the same time very
accessible. Intuitively musical, he builds tracks
using a mix of samples and his own live playing,
including piano and guitar, and largely recorded
in his own bedrom. The result is beautifully
listenable contemporary music. Based in Bristol,
an uncommonly fertile ground for new British
sounds, Ben is constantly pushing the boundaries
and merging genres.... DJ Die of Full
Cycle/Reprazent fame, was a key player in
developing the original sound. It's not a surprise
Ben cites influences ranging from classical music
to drum and bass and from jazz to hip hop. And
he's as comfortable creating folky
me-and-my-guitar gems as he is producing intricate
syncopated beats on his computer. Still a relative
newcomer, you may not have heard of him before
now, but Ben Westbeech is a singer and producer
likely to be in your ears for some time. He's
already recorded a killer Maida Vale session for
Gilles' Radio 1 show, and other gigs have included
Love Box, The Big Chill and Rum Do. The first
single, So Good Today was a big tune that got real
radio support from DJs across the genre spectrum û
from Pirate stations to Pete Tong on Radio 1, to
playlist on BBC 1xtra - there's just something
universally appealing about Ben's music.
Constantly working on new material, genuinely
excited about new music, collaborations and ideas,
this is a newcomer with a fresh sound, tonnes of
energy and the talent to support it. It's a pretty
good start, we reckon - no wonder he feels So Good
Today...
