Female fronted indiepop band with a lot of doo-wopping and the
occasional wall of sound, try it!
'ain't never been cool' is all raucous handclaps, wondrous
horn arrangements and rock and roll guitars, it soars from
gorgeous hook to knock-out left hook with an effortless
insouciance, bursting into life with the delicious rawness of
ali howard's stripped back voice, then crescendo-ing in a big
crashing epiphany of unbridled harmony-soaked joy. (those
handclaps, by the way, are courtesy of actual lucky soul fans,
found via the luckysoul.co.uk discussion boards). 'struck
dumb' meanwhile is the best song that never came out of the
1950s. it's a dazzling, twisting, perfectly produced song,
featuring one of the best ever uses of a tremolo bar and a
ripping chorus whose straight-talking sentiment - "i want you
so bad that it hurts" - speaks a refreshingly different
language to the languid self-absorption of (hushed tones) emo.
finally, 'i gots the magic' is sparkling and infectious and
has a chorus ("your mamma wouldn't like it") masquerading as a
childhood taunt and a completely unexpected chunk of heavy
distorted guitar.
This is generally released on 7" only so enjoy this cd rip!
