The widely acclaimed vocalist Johanna Iivanainen and five splendid
musicians make together up Korpi Ensemble which combines jazz, world
music and other styles in their music in a most fascinating and unique
way. Last autumn release Trails was picked up as one of the best 2006
Finnish CD-releases by the cultural editioral board of Helsingin
Sanomat (the biggest daily in Finland). The album has also got
critical acclaims all around the Finnish media.
Trails certainly isnÆt the first album by this amazing band but it
will definitely be the primus motor in getting Korpi Ensemble more
widely known and acclaimed. The album Puu (meaning ætreeÆ in English)
was a 2004-release by Texicalli Records and it is internationally
distributed. The international launching of Trails will happen in
February 2007.
The music is a captivating cocktail of different styles of music. The
world music elements reach from Argentinean tango to Lappish yoik
(Sßmi music), and along the jazz influences one can also hear traces
of pop music. The result of all of this is artistically high-class,
yet also easy listening, beautiful and relaxing music. The main
composer is the versatile guitarist Petri KivimΣki whereas the lyrics
are often written by Johanna Iivanainen and arrangements made
collectively.
The main focus in Korpi Ensemble is naturally focused on the vocalist
Johanna Iivanainen. She has been for several year been selected by the
music critics as the best female jazz vocalist in Finland. She also
got the very first (Finnish) Sony Jazz Prize in 2003 and performs
regularly in many jazz groups such as Antti Sarpila Swing Band, Eero
Koivistoinen Band, and an a cappella group JimJamMurMur. Various
bands, CDs and theatre productions can also be found in the
backgrounds of the other musicians.
