The last time I talked about Revenge, it was from their debut album
"Triumph.Genocide.Antichrist". Well, two years before that album came out,
the band released their debut record in 2001 with an EP titled
"Attack.Blood.Revenge". This EP may not be as well-known as their later
stuff, but it has its own good merits. While far from their best work, its
still an interesting EP nonetheless.

Let's start off with the instruments. The EP starts off with the track
"Yabssor Born / Blood of My Blood", which begins with a dark ambient piece
with sirens and groans in the background. This ambient piece sets up the
dark and disturbing atmosphere of the EP, and it later transitions to
Revenge's signature song "Blood of My Blood". Compared to their debut
album, the guitars are more drowned out in the mix, especially when the
instruments play fast and chaotic. The drums are also very vibrant and
aggressive in their beats, and I especially love that cheap snare they
play, as it's more like an improved version of the snares in St. Anger.
The bass, however, is a bit mundane and doesn't play some interesting
riffs. This version of "Blood of My Blood" is more raw and unfiltered than
in the album version, and I kinda dig it. I also liked the track
"Annihilate or Serve", as its more chaotic tone works even better with the
agonizing vocals and blaring riffs. The production of this EP is more
unclean than in later releases, but it does offer some raging riffs and
loud drum play.

What feels a bit underwhelming though is the vocals. I'm usually a sucker
for James Read's vocals, but here, they feel a bit underpowered. He still
has the high shrieks and deep growls like all the other releases, but they
don't pack the same punch. To see what I mean, let's take a look at their
cover for Bathory's "War". Instrumentally, this song is fantastic, as the
more fast and chaotic atmosphere gives the song a new meaning. However,
the vocals aren't given much attention in the mix, so it sounds a bit
drowned it. As for the deep growls, they don't feel very deep, and they
sound very pathetic when you compare it to stuff like
"Behold.Total.Rejection". The vocals would be a lot better if it were in a
less-intensive war metal album, but given the instruments it has to face,
it doesn't stand a chance.

But while the vocals sound a bit underwhelming, that doesn't mean the
entire EP is trash. It does still feature some excellent guitar riffs and
beat patterns, and their cover for War is one of my favorite Bathory
covers, despite the weaker vocals. Revenge would go on to release their
debut album two years later, and a lot of people seem to forget about this
release when they talk about Revenge, but I recommend you go check it out
if you want to hear Revenge at their early, Conqueror-sounding stage.
