A warm night in early summer. A golden ocean. An
excellent view. An album full of pop music, rock
music, dance music, songwriter music. Nonchalant,
eloquent and elegant in the choice of its musical
gestures. It is softer and sometime more reduced
compared to "Miami", the debut of The Go Find in
2004. The sky was full of laptop-loops, then. Now,
bass and drums paint twinkling constellations onto
the horizon. "Stars on the wall" is a pop album
that does not need to fear comparison with
anything. And that doesn't do so, though.
Sometimes it has an air of the smooth chic of
Fleetwood Macs "Rumours". Sometimes, the naked,
pleasant warmth of guitar, voice and microphone.
Later on followed by accords tumble out of a
well-travelled Hammond organ, an analogue
synthesizer (the studio was full of them) and a
smiling refrain. 70s, 80s, reminiscences out of
that great echo chamber named popmusic, but never
sounding retro, not even for a second.
"Good sounding danceable pop tunes" - Dieter
Sermeus does not expect a lot from his music and
at the same time he expects endlessly much. At
home in Antwerp he went into the studio with his
live band that have also accompanied him on stage
for the past three years. Thus the four of them
have worked together also for The Go Find's new
recordings. Their sound, however, has become
slimmer, with many voids for details. The rhythms
are placed precisely, strikingly inconspicuous
into the forefront. The recording is transparent,
present, cool.
"Beautiful Night" is a promise. An overture, that
leads by means of aged synthie-transistors into
the album. Then, there is a faint suggestion of a
chorus, a foretaste. "Dictionary" starts agreeably
reserved, dry drums and a pithy bass. The band
puts in some more ingredients: handclaps,
hook-lines, precise delays - neon light. Or, in
another track like "Ice on Ice", the exact
opposite, moonshine, acoustic guitars. And this
amiable voice that tells of how memories fade
away. And at the same time it revives so many
remembrances and associations. Finally, there is
"We don't wanna": the guitars are no longer that
go-getting, they advance in a rather dancing way
now and thus share an atmosphere with the early
The Sea and Cake.
