Immanu El is a post-rock band from Sweden as a musical experiment in
J÷nk÷ping, Sweden 2004 by then 16-year-old Claes StrΣngberg, soon joined by
his twin brother Per and high school friends David Lillberg and Jonatan
Josefsson.
Like many other Swedish Post-Rock bands, Immanu El's music focuses on vocals
even more so than bands like Logh, Ef and September Malevolence.
Immanu El's music can be seen as a combination of ambient, Indie Pop (mainly
because of the vocals) and Post-Rock. The vocals are somewhat similar to
Jonsi's from Sigur R≤s and are sang in English. The music is very atmospheric
and prefers to stay subtle and not loud. Highly recommended for fans of Sigur
R≤s, Ef, Gregor Samsa, Logh, September Malevolence and other Post-Rock bands
that emphasizes on vocals.
Their first release was an CDR EP in 2005 called, "Killerwhale". After doing
some live shows and touring with different artists such as Sigur R≤s and the
previously mentioned Ef they struck a deal with And The Sound records. In
August of 2007 they released their full-length debut, "They'll Come, They
Come".
The band has gained a reputation as one of the most promising bands from
Scandinavia and have performed over 300 shows in 30 countries since the debut
album was released.

With so many bands trying to make it in this insanely competitive and
difficult time for the record industry, it can be difficult to stick what you
do best. It's hard to make something you love while not giving in to what may
be easier to sell. It's tough to be patient. I have many great things to say
about Sweden's Immanu El, but what I love the most is how patient their music
is. We've all heard the clichΘ "Patience is a virtue," but just because it's
a clichΘ doesn't mean it's not true. Patience is something this band needed
during their nearly five year hiatus. However, the rest and recharging has
paid off with the return of their new LP, and its clever and all too fitting
title, Hibernation. It's spacious and haunting, ethereal, emotional and
serene. As their first full release after a recent signing with Glitter House
Records, Hibernation is a pleasant whirlwind that is sure to make you weep
and smile, possibly at the same time.
Thom Yorke once said, "I want to be alone and I want people to notice me -
both at the same time." This is something I understand when listening to
records like Radiohead's In Rainbows, Sigur Ros' Kveikur, Vancouver Sleep
Clinic's Winter, and now, Hibernation. All too often, the beauty that
loneliness and heartache can provide is overlooked. A song sounding 'sad' or
'depressing' has a negative connotation. Music, or any art form, is a
release; a way of letting out emotions, calling out, and expressing oneself
in ways that might not otherwise be possible.
The record's first single and opener, "Voices," begins slowly and sweetly
with distant shining pads and guitar feedback. It builds into a heavy four on
the floor pulse, like a magical beast slowly stomping up your stairs in the
night. Its dreamy and romantic melody sets a clear tone that Immanu El have
attached themselves to a league of brilliant Nordic acts like Sigur Ros.
Next, "Winter Solstice" holds a heart-pounding drum groove behind Claes
StrΣngberg's ambient pop vocals: a driving upbeat track, and maybe the most
pop forward one on the LP.
The album's second single "Omega," which has a wonderful video directed by
Nicholas Livanos, has a long and steady build. Echoing guitar lines and
pounding drums lead way into an explosive and uplifting climax which soar sky
high until the end. As StrΣngberg told Ja Ja Ja Music, "Omega is about a
personal revelation; feeling a connection with the eternal that gives a
perspective on the temporary. Omega compliments the first single from
Hibernation, "Voices", nicely as it presents a more driven aspect to the
sound of the Hibernation album. It has an energy and intensity that is in
contrast to the ambience and depth of other songs and creates a dynamic shift
in the album that we are very happy with." Towards the end, "Hours" builds
with delicate soundscapes and distant, falsetto vocals that suck the listener
in. As the songs opens up, StrΣngberg drives through an uplifting vocal
melody while the band holds strong with only a few tasteful and explosive
hits.
This is music made for revealing the emotions of long, cold winters, snowy
mountains and starry nights. Immanu El paints vivid descriptions of stories
you can visualize as vocalist, Claes StrΣngberg, allows them to unfold
through his lyrics. The slow and seductive work reveals a band that
collectively knows how to write in a manner that makes each song come to
life. The album is impressive and beautiful, full of enchanting harmonies and
glimmering guitar and synth lines. All bias or exaggerations aside,
Hibernation is worth everyone's time. It's polished and complete, impeccably
but not overly produced, and most importantly, it's a cohesive eight track
collection. The album is a hypnotic and immersive post-rock statement,
telling us that these Swedes are back. Although it is the band's fourth
album, it is a jumping off point that will surely put them in the know of
lovers of bands like Hammock, Explosions In The Sky, and Tycho.

more time and focus into the production than ever before, Immanu El worked
with Swedish Grammy nominated producer Johan Eckeborn and managed to create
something unique, developing the sound of the band and making the songs more
compelling and exciting than ever. Hibernation has brought a new level of
grandeur and simplicity to Immanu El's music, making them one of Sweden's
most interesting musical exports of the last years. Hibernation is a
beautiful well crafted piece of art, leaping over the treshold to the most
talented quarters of dreamy postrock, where you can find a priceless
presence.
Immanu El has reached to the forefront as one of Scandinavia's most prominent
bands, touring together with Explosions in the Sky and headlining festivals
in Europe and the US. After touring China, including two festivals slots at

Fⁿnf Jahre ist das letzte und dritte Album "In Passage" der Schweden von
Immanu El mittlerweile alt. Und natⁿrlich h÷rt man ihrer neuen Platte
"Hibernation" die Zeit an, die seit 2011 verstrichen ist. Zum einen hatte die
Band zwischenzeitlich einen energiesaugenden, zweijΣhrigen Rechtsstreit
hinter sich gebracht. Zum anderen ging es darum, die poppige Entwicklung von
"In Passage" weiterzufⁿhren. Die neuen Songs sollten deshalb moderner und
elektronischer klingen. "Die letzten Alben hatten wir jeweils in ein paar
Tagen live eingespielt. Fⁿr die neuen Songs wΣre das nicht der richtige Weg
gewesen", ist man sich bei Immanu El einig. Also nahm die Band zum ersten Mal
in ihrer Karriere die Hilfe eines Produzenten in Anspruch. Mit Johan
Eckeborn, der fⁿr seine Arbeit mit Jonathan Johansson und dessen Album
"Lebensraum!" eine Grammy-Nominierung einheimste, bekam "Hibernation" die
gewⁿnschten Konturen. Die neuen Immanu-El-Songs sind fokussierter als je
zuvor. Auf den letzten Alben deutete die Band oft nur an, wie viel Pop in ihr
steckt, und schmⁿckte die Melodien und Refrains geschickt mit ausladenden
Arrangements aus. Die neuen Songs wie "Voices", "Winter Solstice" und "Omega"
kommen dagegen schnell auf den Punkt und setzen fast schon radiotaugliche
Refrains gekonnt in Szene. Cool: Die Schweden klingen trotz der musikalischen
Weiterentwicklung immer noch ganz wie sie selbst!

Wie kommt das nur, dass softe Musik aus dem Norden so viele Fans hierzulande
findet? Sind weite Natur, Stille und Einsamkeit " die man stereotyp mit
Schweden und Island verbindet " die Grⁿnde dafⁿr, dass wir fⁿr Kitsch aus
n÷rdlichen Regionen viel eher empfΣnglich sind als fⁿr Balladen aus
Wanne-Eickel? Wie dem auch sei " Immanu El aus G÷teborg wissen, wie man
Gefⁿhliges in weite, weiche KlangflΣchen bettet.
Vier Platten lang ackerte sich die Gruppe, die gern mal mit EF und Sigur R≤s
verglichen wird, im Post-Rock ab. Auf Immanu Els fⁿnftem Album "Hibernation"
entfernen sie sich erstmals von ihrer K÷nigsdisziplin. Die ausufernden
Arrangements nehmen sie aber mit, genauso wie den sanften, emotionalen
Gesang. Mit ihrem Pathos wandeln Immanu El schon immer auf einem schmalen
Grad " bei manchen H÷rerInnen kann der gro▀e Gefⁿhle, bei anderen wiederum
Brechreiz hervorrufen.
Jedoch pendeln sich Immanu El bei jedem Song von "Hibernation" auf einem
angenehmen Level ein. Der Melancholie von in die Ferne hallenden Gitarren
wird der Minimalismus von lang gezogenen Synthie-T÷nen entgegengesetzt. Im
Song "Omega" schaukelt sich beides gegenseitig ganz leicht und ⁿbermⁿtig auf.
Die Pianoballade "Completorium" wird mit Ambient-Sprenkeln und einem sich im
Entstehen aufl÷senden Pfeifen aufgelockert. Und das Beinah-Instrumental
"Dvala" bricht die eingΣngige und rⁿhrende Gesamtstimmung von in der Mitte
des Albums auf.
Den Schritt in Richtung Pop-Song meistern Immanu El mit "Hibernation", ohne
von ihren Wurzeln ganz abzulassen.

Amoureux de Logh et de Sigur R≤s, cÆest ΓgΘ dÆα peine 16 ans que Claes
StrΣngberg fonde Immanu El en 2004, avec son frΦre jumeau et deux amis
dÆenfance. Depuis, le quatuor suΘdois a connu quelques changements de line up
et son post-rock ΘthΘrΘ originel sÆest muΘ en une pop α la voix douce et
rΩveuse, mais la qualitΘ des compositions du groupe nÆa fait que confirmer le
talent de ces jeunes musiciens aux piΦces dÆune maturitΘ qui nÆa rien α
envier α celles de leurs aεnΘs.
½ Hibernation ╗, quatriΦme album dÆImmanu El, fraεchement paru, en est la
plus belle preuve. Un opus hivernal, mais fort dÆune chaleur dΘlicieusement
rΘconfortante. A dΘcouvrir absolument.
Tout au long de ses huit morceaux, ½ Hibernation ╗ dΘploie des harmonies
atmosphΘriques dÆune beautΘ α la fois Θclatante et fragile. Des vents
oniriques soufflent avec force et grΓce. LÆensemble, portΘ par une voix
vaporeuse et orchestrΘ avec soin, est dΘlicat et raffinΘ. Intime et aΘrien.
Riche de trΦs belles Θmotions.
DΦs lÆouverture du disque et lÆenvo√tant Voices, les mΘlodies bercent
lÆauditeur α bonheur, lÆenveloppant dÆun cocon de bien Ωtre savoureux. Un
titre sublime qui fait oublier le prΘsent et peint dΦs ses premiΦres notes
les promesses dÆΘternitΘ quÆoffrira le disque.
Aux c⌠tΘs des guitares vibrantes et dÆune batterie tout en apesanteur,
lÆintroduction de synthΘtiseurs donne une nouvelle ampleur aux compositions
du groupe, des plus lΘgΦres aux plus intenses. Les nappes de rΘverbΘrations
accompagnent la voix dÆune douceur absolue dans des envolΘes cΘlestes. Voix
qui ne se tait que lors dÆune brΦve parenthΦse de milieu dÆalbum, avec
lÆastral Dvala, mot titre de lÆalbum puisquÆil est lÆislandais dÆhibernation.
De part et dÆautre, lÆopus fait chanter voix et instruments, Θtendant ses
ailes dans lÆenvol dÆorchestrations riches mais dÆune fluiditΘ parfaite.
JusquÆα lÆenchanteresse cl⌠ture du disque et le soyeux Empty Hands.
Avec ½ Hibernation ╗, Immanu El offre un album faisant naεtre une exquise
sensation de plΘnitude. Magnifique.

Post-rock, shoegaze, Dream-pop, des courants qui tout en ayant leurs
particularitΘs, n'en conservent pas moins un certain lien de parentΘ et font
face α des problΦmes similaires. Comme tout style musical qui atteint un
certain Γge, l'inertie guette. Les suΘdois d'Immanu El font partie des
formations rΘcentes qui dΘjouent les pronostics et offrent un nouveau souffle
α des courants qui menacent de tomber en dΘsuΘtude. Le troisiΦme album des
suΘdois, In Passage (2011), Θtait un monument de beautΘ et la meilleure
preuve que l'on pouvait encore trouver des groupes capables de faire rΩver.
5 ans, un double changement d'effectif, plusieurs apparitions dans des
festivals internationaux (Etats-Unis, Canada, Chine) et une campagne de
financement participatif rΘussie plus tard, Immanu El est finalement de
retour avec Hibernation. Le titre apparaεt judicieusement choisi tant l'album
se concentre sur l'introspection, offrant un Θcrin toujours plus intimiste
aux mΘlodies. Ce nouvel effort est dΘnuΘ de fioritures et se concentre
vΘritablement sur l'essentiel, α tel point qu'une Θcoute superficielle peut
le faire paraεtre trop simple. Erreur, dans laquelle votre serviteur est
d'ailleurs tombΘ la tΩte la premiΦre dans un premier temps.
Certes, les guitares sont en retrait, les arrangements Θlectro plus
prononcΘs, bien que toujours discrets, et les mΘlodies sont directes. Ayant
atteint la maturitΘ sur leur prΘcΘdent long, les musiciens ont choisi de
sortir de leur zone de confort et de poursuivre leur chemin vers une certaine
forme de puretΘ en se dΘbarassant de tout ce qui n'Θtait pas absolument
nΘcessaire. Paradoxalement, l'album peut s'avΘrer relativement difficile
d'approche tant l'attention et un certain Θtat d'esprit sont nΘcessaires pour
se l'approprier et en retirer la substantifique moelle.
Le morceau d'ouverture,"Voices", est un bon exemple, invitation au
recueillement, α l'introspection, parfaite bande-son de l'hiver sous la
neige, propice α l'Θmerveillement devant une aurore borΘale. Il y a quelque
chose de presqu'enfantin dans la puretΘ des Θmotions proposΘes, qui ne sont
troublΘes par aucun dΘsir parasite, par aucune pensΘe impure, par aucune note
dΘplacΘe. Le quintet se concentre sur son objectif sans jamais dΘvier de sa
route.
Le revers de la mΘdaille de cette ambiance α couper au couteau consiste en un
rythme lent qui pourra s'avΘrer un peu rΘbarbatif pour certains. Les
musiciens ont choisi un parti pris artistique certain, au risque d'en
dΘcevoir certains et de plaire ΘnormΘment α d'autres. Ou, mieux, de pouvoir
proposer un album susceptible de plaire α beaucoup, pour peu que l'on profite
de l'album quand le bon Θtat d'esprit est lα, quand les conditions sont
rΘunies. Reste que la grande beautΘ de la musique proposΘe ici n'a rien
d'illusoire, mais elle ne dΘlivrera tout son potentiel que dans les
conditions idoines, comme en plein coeur de la nuit, au plus profond de
l'hiver.
