The White Birch is a Norwegian slowcore project of Ola Fl°ttum, formed in
Oslo, Norway in 1996. Previously a trio composed of Ola Fl°ttum, Hans
Christian Almendingen, and Ulf Rogde, the band released three studio albums
and then broke up after the band played their last show in 2006. However, Ola
Fl°ttum released their fourth album The Weight of Spring in 2015, nearly ten
years after their last release.
The name comes from the 1994 album The White Birch by the band Codeine, one
of the cornerstones of slowcore. They are sometimes called the "Norwegian
Sigur R≤s."

In August 2006, Norwegian band The White Birch played what seemed at the time
to be their final show, and broke up after ten years and four albums
together. The band survived, though, in the heart and mind of Ola Flottum,
who refused to forsake the band. He began composing music for films, learning
bit by bit how to accompany pictures with his music. He describes his time
since the band's break-up: It has taken nine years, many songs have been
thrown out the window before I eventually found my 12 chosen ones. During
these years I've lost my mother, started a family, raised two kids, and
bought a house in Oslo were I've recorded most of the album in the basement.
The resultant music takes the form of sometimes almost unnoticeable tones and
soundscapes. The Weight of Spring. The world as we see it. A long road. In
the end Darkness will prevail. Once I was just a boy with the urge to
destroy. I did not read these newborn sparks through the wilting trees, I
could only see the dark as it came. Earth, as it awakes. Warmth. I was blind,
now I can see... no more darkened doors. And as it elapses. Pain. As the
morning dew fell as rain. The White Birch became Ola Flottum. A lot of
freedom, not always so easy to cope with, since you have to argue with
yourself. Flottum recorded alongside the classically trained composer Ole
Henrik Moe on violin, viola, and singing saw, with rhythm from Norwegian
Academy of Music graduate Pal Hausken and Moren Barrikmo - both members of
Susanna Wallumrod's Magical Orchestra (Wallumrod herself contributes vocals
on The Hours). The album also features Ingrid Olava, Ingar Hunskaar (Kings of
Convenience, St. Thomas, Serena-Maneesh, Jaga Jazzist), and Flottum's wife,
the actress Ellen Dorrit Petersen. Grammy-winning mastering engineer Bob Katz
put the final touches on The Weight of Spring. Will we remember this album in
the distant future? And if so how? Names? Instruments? It's origin? The
places it took us to? The White Birch: The Weight of Spring: Love, as it
awakes. Love will never change the morning sun, love will never change the
way the darkness runs.

kleines Meisterwerk STAR IS JUST A SUN geh÷rt zum Allerbesten innerhalb des
Label-Kataloges.
Die CD-only-Ver÷ffentlichung stammt aus 2002, vier Jahre spΣter l÷sten sich
The White Birch auf und entschwanden. Dachte man!
OF SPRING hervorbrachte.

Nine years ago this month (August), one of Norway's finest psychedelic bands
dissolved, leaving four remarkable albums for us to replay over and over
again. But fans can now rejoice, as leader Ola Fl°ttum has assembled an
illustrious collection of some of Norway's finest musicians (including
members of Susanna's Magical Orchestra, Kings of Convenience, and St. Thomas)
produce this glistening recording of heartbreaking-yet life affirming
soundscapes. (The album is dedicated to Fl°ttum 's mother, who passed away
during its 9-year gestation.) Almost cinematic in scope, the album opens with
'New York', imperceptively tiptoeing into the room on a forlorn piano motif
and Fl°ttum's creaking vocals, seemingly whispered so as not to disturb the
little ones slumbering in an adjacent room. 'The Fall' is even softer, a hazy
treatise on loss and "a wish for some clarity" to explain why.
The somber mood continues through the ironic coupling of banjo and violin on
'Solid Dirt', at once both uplifting and mournful. 'Lamentation' briefly
alleviates the pain with a (somewhat) upbeat resiliency, although the lyrics
could be interpreted as someone sleepwalking through the day in a constant
state of catatonic resolution to painful events that cannot be undone.
I must confess a weakness for everything Susanna Wallumr°d has recorded, and
her duet on 'The Hours' lifts it from the funereal, elegiac sway that comes
over me as I spend hours waiting for the days to end. 'Lay Me By The Shore'
is one of the most perfect love songs I've experienced in ages, and if a love
song doesn't make you cry, it's not doing its job. Finally, Fl°ttum's eulogy
for his 'Mother' will leave not a dry eye in the house for anyone whose mum
has passed, leaving behind all who knew and loved her "To feel the pain/As
the morning dew/Fell as rain."
Listeners unfamiliar with Fl°ttum's previous White Birch albums may find
comfortable reference points in the work of Tindersticks, Bill [Smog]
Callahan, and Richard Baskin's Welcome To L.A. soundtrack. Explosions In The
Sky, Low, and Sigur Ros also drifted through my mind as I sat transfixed and
transported to a distant horizon of grey days, rainy afternoons, and silent
replies to my wandering thoughts. Snorecore enthusiasts will also recognize a
major influence in seminal snorecore band, Codeine, whose final album,
released just as they were disbanding and White Birch were forming, provided
the band's name. This is reflective, thousand yard stare music for navel
gazing, silent contemplation, and taking stock of what you have before you
lose it.

radikal umkrempeln, sind The White Birch ihrem sanftleisen Stil treu
geblieben.
Gras fⁿttern. Wo andere Interpreten ihr Cover krampfhaft aufzudonnern
versuchen, halten es die Norweger schlicht. Weniger ist manchmal mehr, im
Falle von The Weight of Spring sogar viel mehr.
Danke fⁿr
dieses Album!

....ich hatte the white birch schon abgeschrieben, sehr viel zeit ist
vergangen seit ihrem letzten album (come up for air)...es gibt alben die sind
hilft the white birch--wie immer unbeschreiblich!

melancholischen atmosphΣre her mag das stimmen, jedoch ist "the white birchs"
musik weit davon entfernt, elfenhaft zu schweben, sondern erscheint eher
bodenstΣndig.

White Birch, perfect in muziek omgezet.
'Lay me by the shore'?
'The weight of spring' is een

Dream Pop
is a subgenre of
alternative rock and neo-psychedelia
that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop
melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions,
and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often
overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the
two genre terms have at times been
used interchangeably.
