As follow up to the 2004 debut release Grunert, which received solid reviews but
went largely unnoticed, comes "Construction Kit. The "Construction Kit" is also
released on Hong Kong Recordings. With Grunert analogue and digital samples melt
into a timeless and eclectic sound collage where warm melodies interact with
rumbling beats. Grunert has become a collector and aficionado of music,
musicians and sounds. He doesn't sample because he lacks musical ability - quite
the contrary, Grunert plays many of the instruments himself - but rather because
he wants to create music from a new perspective. His work results in unexpected
harmonies and each track tells a small story that gets richer with each
retelling. Romantic harmonies from the Rhodes are layered over rattling
rolling-along beats. A muted trumpet pierces through the smokey darkness.
Serenading strings, soft guitars, rough and raspy horns. And finally the sound
of human voices. Grunert will not be limited by genre. His idea is simple: if it
sounds real and good people will listen. Grunert builds his compositions by
laying a firm foundation of beats and harmonies and arranging layers of
live-recorded instruments on top. This is how he acomplishes his style of jazz
mixed with hip-hop that sounds light, smart and new. Grunert paints with sound.
He's a child of the city so his images are urban: backed up traffic, charming
side streets, the sax player you see every day on the corner. "Construction Kit"
is a soundtrack for your daily grind. It reflects all the things that would beat
us down if we didn't remember to stay cool.
