: When the words Chile and Occult Death Metal appear in the :
: same sentence, consider my attention piqued. I have been :
: largely out of the "new discoveries" game for the past :
: decade, up until the last couple of years, and U. Kulten is a :
: new one for me û despite the band being active for 20+ years. :
: The most immediate musical corollary I can find is The Chasm :
: from Mexico. However, U. Kulten step afield from their :
: Central American brothers, and do have qualities of their own :
: on offer, expanding out into a more chaotic and deranged :
: delivery. :
: :
: IÆll get right to it. I didnÆt really know how to judge this :
: album, and I still donÆt exactly. ItÆs good, but itÆs wonky. :
: ItÆs all over the place, in a lot of ways. The Chasm, for :
: instance, has always had immaculate focus, very strong :
: sensibilities to their songwriting, and û even though they :
: traverse many genre styles over the course of an album û they :
: carefully craft this blend with an expert attention to :
: cohesion. U. Kulten kind of does this, but kind of doesnÆt, :
: and û much like their Mexican genre-fellows û they bring :
: influences from far and wide: most notably DM, BM, and :
: Thrash, with some sprinklings of traditional Heavy/Speed :
: Metal. Of particular note are the guitar solos û some are :
: good, some are whatever û they pepper the album, and add a :
: sense of untamed, manic primitivism. :
: :
: I think the second half of this album is much stronger than :
: the first. I saw immediately what kind of atmosphere, and :
: musical admixture U. Kulten were shooting for û one of a :
: rickety cave-dweller dankness, possessed of firelight :
: demon-trance, commuted in a mal-developed, subhuman, ritual :
: blood-offering û but I was not thoroughly convinced, and :
: almost shut it off at first. I stuck it out, though. Was it :
: worth it? Fuck it, at least IÆm getting a review out of it. :
: That being said, the second half was worth the single listen :
: IÆll give this thing. :
: :
: The production is fitting for the music. There is a wash of :
: smokey haze and fuzz that coats the sonic cathedral of HΣxan :
: Sabaoth. Instantly noticeable, this production choice :
: provides a proper atmospheric set and setting for the :
: occultic intent: if I were to pick a favorite aspect to this :
: piece, it has to be that û and they nailed it. Yet, given :
: this, the production values are as they should be: everything :
: has a place in the mix and can be apprehended with some :
: degree of ease û raw, but clear. :
: :
: Nobody is a bad performer here, either. I will say, the vox :
: are not my favorite û and also enunciatively imperceptable û :
: but that is more a personal bias, as I dislike this kind of :
: vocal performace and timbre, so I just tuned them out. The :
: rest of the music was good enough to make up for that :
: shortcoming, and û sometimes û it do be like that. The guitar :
: certainly shines as the star of the show, as one might expect :
: from such a highly varied musical offering. In all, this is :
: not something I will revisit, but û if only for the second :
: half û HΣxan Sabaoth is not without its moments. :
