█▓ The title Paint Lines on Your Glasses Look up at the Stars and ▓█
█▓ Play Them as Notes sounds like a typical exercise in teenage ▓█
█▓ overindulgence, and for a period of time I was willing to ▓█
█▓ simply write it off as such and reserve it a position towards ▓█
█▓ the bottom of my "To Listen" stack of albums. After ▓█
█▓ experiencing the album itself, I'm not quite sure who's at ▓█
█▓ fault. I'll be the first to admit that my hasty generalization ▓█
█▓ was far from the truth, but it cannot go without saying that ▓█
█▓ such a long-winded, overambitious title is bound to be a ▓█
█▓ put-off for potential fans. The music found beyond the ▓█
█▓ extravagant wording is far too instrumentally and emotionally ▓█
█▓ complex to even risk being found in the same category as ▓█
█▓ run-of-the-mill teen emo, or MTVmo, or whatever you wish to ▓█
█▓ call it. ▓█
█▓ ▓█
█▓ The Tall Ships are a three piece from San Diego, and their ▓█
█▓ sound is that of a convoluted mix of Codeine-esque slowcore and ▓█
█▓ the mathy leanings of Rodan and Polvo. Straight out of the ▓█
█▓ gates, the Ships demonstrate a bright shine of promise and ▓█
█▓ destroy any pretension built up by the laborious title with ▓█
█▓ ôDeconstructing Company,ö the band's definitive song. The track ▓█
█▓ is carried by an intricate and idiosyncratic mix of complex ▓█
█▓ riffs, mid-range bass work, scattered percussion, and brusque ▓█
█▓ vocals, all of which come together majestically over the course ▓█
█▓ of Paint Lines to weave a delicate, morose sonic tapestry. ▓█
█▓ ▓█
█▓ The frail, ostinato rhythm that begins ôThrow out the Tonguesö ▓█
█▓ resonates like a ramshackle music box while harsh diction ▓█
█▓ articulates the remnants of a broken relationship; as the words ▓█
█▓ lose their steam, the repeating notes morph into rough guitars ▓█
█▓ and follow the emotions of the speaker. ôThe Sound of Shakingö ▓█
█▓ showcases a riff that one wouldn't be surprised to find on a ▓█
█▓ Gastr del Sol album and utilizes it as a transition into even ▓█
█▓ more composite guitar work and impressive drumming. ôPost ▓█
█▓ Literate,ö the brooding closer, begins passive and stable but ▓█
█▓ then changes tempo without warning and further augments the ▓█
█▓ typical song structure with the glory of a trumpet. ▓█

█▓ The final sounds on Paint Lines are û suitably û that of a ▓█
█▓ rhythmic, pulsing guitar. As these terminal notes faded, I ▓█
█▓ found myself questioning how three men could possibly be ▓█
█▓ capable of such complex yet still fragile arrangements, and I ▓█
█▓ believe to have found an answer: it must be the lines on their ▓█
█▓ glasses. ▓█
