Release Notes:
Winterpills bring you a tender, filigreed sound, a humming, a buzz, a
fragmentation of warmth and chill, a delicate suspension of belief. They are a
band playing you songs of pretty losses and hollow hopefulness. They formed on a
bare wood floor during a snowy winter when mutual friends met to nurse wounds of
various depths, drink, and play other peoples songs, and found they had their
own. They now give those to you in all their friendly, angry fragility.
To make a short story long, there was a big bay window by the bare wood floor,
and the heavy snow fell hypnotically past the yellow streetlights on a treeless
street called Orchard. Philip lay on the floor, looked up and saw his friend
Flora, and later, to her left, his friend Dennis. The catalogs of the Beatles,
Throwing Muses, Neil Young, Stephen Merritt, the Carter Family, Elliott Smith,
and others were all explored with no other thoughts than the sounds within this
unlikely safehouse.
Like a drunken thief, a sleeping body of Philips songs began creeping into the
mix. Near dawn one night, their friend Dave Hower appeared at the door with an
egg full of sand, and it all came together. They touched the new songs very
lightly, as if pushing them too hard might cause them to disappear. Some
actually did. Dennis trembly, watercolor guitar achored the notes beneath each
passage. Philip and Floras voices together made a third, new, never-heard-before
voice. Daves staccato, startling beats pulled the shapes of the songs like taffy
into sweeter, brighter forms that stayed light and yet lived well in the dark
and the cold, and stayed close to the ground. Much like the improbable
bumblebee, the new band formed and chose to fly.
With their Signature Sounds/Soft Alarm debut, Winterpills deliver an album that
marks the arrival of a quietly stunning new band. Philips transcendent melodies
have never sounded more compelling or been performed with such reverence.
Showcasing intimate male female vocals, haunting electric guitar, and bold
inventive drumming, the album captures the sound of a band that has discovered a
rare alignment of musicianship. From the straight-ahead pop of Threshing
Machine, to the hushed show-stopping beauty of Want the Want, Winterpills and
producer JosΘ Ayerve, have created a heartbreakingly expressive record.
