It's been quite a while since we last saw post-Kraut-rock
veterans Trans Am but by the sounds of it they've been pretty
busy on this little beast. Apparently whilst recording it the
band were so pushed for time (flitting between Australia, the
UK and the USA) that they came up with a series of cards
called "Obscene Strategies". You may remember that Brian Eno
came up with the "Oblique Strategies" for recording engineers,
which was a series of suggestions to help their creative
juices flow, well the "Obscene Strategies" are something
similar to this, yet a little more insane. So we have
suggestions such as "Hose down the control room", "Leave the
studio unlocked overnight" or "Rip off Black musicians". As
you can imagine the resulting album is something quite
haphazard and quite knowingly zany. they've always been ready
to mess around with the world's pre-conceptions but now they
seem to be taking it one step too far. I have to respect the
fact that the band genuinely sound like they're jamming and
having a lot of fun with it, but all the crazy sonic
tomfoolery and genre-based oddness it can be a little jarring.
One minute you're listening to Georgio Moroder, the next
you're listening to Iron Maiden, it's kind of offputting at
times. One for those that like their music pickled just
slightly too long, and like their post-rock with a twist of
the very very weird indeed.
