Further evidence of the undoubted fact that Italian
jazz is enjoying a period of great vitality is
offered by L'amico del vento . This can be seen in
its freshness and in the ease with which Stefano
Cantini, Rita Marcotulli, Raffaello Pareti and the
Arke String Quartet weave their music around themes
which acquire depth and create a harmonic mosaic of
great interest and quality.
Their music produces in me the sense of a journey
which, thanks partly to the fine orchestral
arrangements, takes us along a road leading into
the future and at the same time into our past
memories: an example of this (and I mention it with
particular pleasure) is Cantini's homage to Luca
Flores. This musical project seems to me to be
based on emotions, but with them there is also
poetry and levity, and there is plenty in it to
inspire our jazz musicians in the future.
If, in the words of Pessoa's epigraph, Art is the
proof that living is not enough, then we must
surrender to the beauty of this music and allow it
to carry us off on a wind that will bring new air
to our souls.
