'Mining the outsider strains' of musical movements old and new is one
of the stated aims of DJ Subaru, the fast-rising DJ/producer behind
the noted Pleasuremaxxx parties. The artist's musical ethos, which
naturally seems strongly bound to their non-binary identity, comes
through loud and clear on their first missive for Palm Trax's popular
CWPT imprint. We get two takes on lead cut (and vocalist Tiss Vampiric
collaboration) 'My Love': the Italo-disco-goes-wavy-80s-alt-pop of the
original mix, and a stretched-out, acid-flecked 'Discomiks' from
Norwegian space disco don Prins Thomas. Elsewhere, 'I <3 You' is an
analogue-rich chugger wrapped in colourful chords, 'Three' is a Bobby
Orlando-influenced chunk of Hi-NRG/Italo-disco fusion and 'Just
Visiting' is a suitably camp and over-the-top throb-job with added
heavy electro beats.
