It seems incongruous then that Secret StealthÆs new release is infectious (but
not in the way the school meals were) cosmic disco well worth revisiting.
Secret Stealth are Jim Baron (Crazy Penis/ Ron Basejam) and Bob Sadler (Fug/
Waxploitation/ Fram), whose groove dance beats, catchy tunes (remember æDream of
YouÆ?) have been around since 2004 when they released the Ted Rogers EP and more
recently Ssshhh.
Mince and Onions treads the line of being annoyingly chipper and synthy but
always manages to redeem iteself with a new sound, sample or live instrument
just as youÆre reaching for the skip button.
æDrive Me CrazyÆ is light vocal disco house and sets the scene for the rest of
the dance-floor friendly Mince and Onions dipping into funk horns and guitars on
æHigh RiserÆ, drum and bass on æWacky BackyÆ (a really quirky catchy track which
slips in some well placed harmonica and hammond just as itÆs getting unbearable
with the heavy synth sounds). æHooked on YouÆ is the most disco and with æDrive
Me CrazyÆ the most likely candidates for singles and remixes - expect to hear
one or both. The frankly bizarre lyrics of æFreeÆ which end the album solidify
the feeling Secret Stealth really think dance music ought to have a sense of
humour injected into it - no bad thing in this day and age of maximal sub house.
Mince and Onions is released on 19 March by Bocajito Records. Also worth
checking out is the Secret Stealth live show, which is touring Sheffield,
Nottingham and Oslo in February.
