     Recorded January 1972 - Released 1972
     Remastered and Rereleased in 2004

Dieter Moebius - Guitars, keyboards, electronics, percussion & FX.
Hans-Joachim Roedelius - Guitars, keyboards, electronics,
     percussion & FX.

For some reason I always seem to come away from this album feeling
disappointed. It just doesn't ever really get to satisfy. It seems
to meader at will without ever achieving anything positive and is
totally tuneless. Just when you think that it might be getting
there it just shudders to a halt as if its waiting for you to do
something like the cursor on the page throbbing throbbing. It can
be quite disturbing. It reminds me of the city-scape scenes in
Blade Runner with all the dark inhabitants at ground level dodging
the shadows but up above the planes, trains etc are wizzing about
their business ferrying faceless people to who knows where.
Frankly I'm unsure whether this album deserves its place in the
top 50 as I don't like it, but that could be a very good and
highly justifiable reason for including it as it achieves its
     objectives superbly.
-Julian Cope in _Krautrocksampler_ (this album is #15 in his top
     50 Krautrock list)

Cluster II is the second album released by Moebius and Roedelius
as a duo after Konrad Schnitzel left the band. Even though it's
not quite as good as the debut, it sounds a lot like it:
ever-changing beatless ambient soundscapes, various electronic
effects. It's not quite as "deep" as Cluster '71 and has a less
spacey atmosphere. The tracks are shorter and more joyful than the
brooding Cluster '71 but not as sweet as Zuckerzeit. This album
was the last of ambient works before Cluster turned to a more
accessible, poppy sound. There is more "balls" than Custer '71,
the organs and guitars sound more conventional than on the debut
where they were used strictly as drones. There is still plenty of
distortion and effects applied, but the overall sound is more laid
     back.

It opens with Plas, a pretty Cluster 71 sounding piece, dark
trembling atmosphere of organ drones and guitar distortion.
Second, Im Suden, is one of the longest tracks and one of the
best. It's very repetitive, consisting of the same four-note
guitar melody repeated for 12 minutes, with all sorts of
electronic effects applied on top. Minimalistic but captivating,
with a much more uplifting mood than the first track. Fur Die Katz
is very short and more disordered with lots of random elecronic
effects all over, but it flows nice. Live In Der Fabrik is the
second epic track on the album. It's very experimental and
disordered, no structure or melody, yet it maintains perfect
internal harmony. It reminds me greatly of their work during the
Kluster period. Georgel goes back to the dark feeling. Mystical,
deep piece that would fit on Cluster 71, consisting of keyboard
drones and trembling effects applied on top. Nabitte closes the
album with the darkest moment. Trembling piano rhythm with buzzing
on foreground that sounds like ghosts in a haunted house. Nice
     conclusion.

Overall, amazing and highly influential album from a genius band.
Cluster created some of the finest electronic music ever created,
and this album is a must have for all fans of Krautrock and Prog
     Electronic!
