Australian four-piece Minimum Chips have been operating
in their home country for some time now with a slew of
Antipodean-exclusive releases, at long last now picked up
by those silver-eared folk over at the ever-wonderful
Moteer label. 'Lady Grey' is a collection of tracks
culled from two EP releases - "Sound Asleep" and "Kitchen
Tea Thankyou" and serves as a flawless introduction to
the band's sultry sound. Obviously influenced by the
likes of Stereolab and Broadcast as well as Low,
Francoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourg, the band combines a
love of lounge pop with a fun streak devoid of cynicism
or pretension. Those of you who still pine for the
turtle-necked avant-lounge sounds of Broadcast's early
releases ('Work and Non-Work'-era) will not be
disappointed - the album starts as it means to go on with
'Cold Afternoon', a swaggering half-tempo moment indebted
to the world of slow-core indie taking frontwoman Nicole
Thibault's haunting vocal tones as a starting point,
providing comfort for the journey ahead. In the wrong
hands this kind of plodding pseudo-pop could have come
across as depressing, but Minimum Chips have the gift of
injecting hope and jubilation into the least obvious
places, which is maybe the key to the album's success.
The highlight here is the classic period Stereolab
electroid pop excess of 'Know You Too Well' - a hit
single if ever I heard one. Again we're blessed with the
pitch-perfect breathiness of Nicole Thibault which
carries us through a retro-organ led bounce which should
send shivers down the spine of pop fans far and wide.
There has been a re-kindling of interest in indie-pop
with defiant electronic leanings in recent months,
something which has sadly driven scores of young bands to
try and capture that classic Postal Service sound without
much grounding in the finer art of songwriting. Minimum
Chips thanfully act as a refreshing alternative to this,
digging a little deeper and past the obvious
reference-points to create something that not only pastes
itself to your memory instantly but that also
encapsulates that bittersweet melancholy with minimum
fuss. The band have with "Lady Grey" produced the
soundtrack to that romantic French holiday you never had
- perfectly capturing the powdery stuff dreams are made
of. Fabulous.
