Freshly signed to U.S. indie Matador, Love of
Diagrams offer up a new full-length disc, Mosaic.
Recorded with Bob Weston at the famed Electrical
Audio Studios in Chicago, the album drags the
expectations of the Fitzroy cognoscenti as the band
announce themselves to the world. LOD seemed to
emerge fully formed in 2001 and besides the
addition of vocals since 2004Æs We Got
Communication their sound has changed little over
the years. Still, given the passionate intensity
and sheer electrical output of LODÆs music, thereÆs
not much need to evolve.
The 12 tracks on Mosaic are as tight and kinetic as
ever, the bass providing an anchor on the riverbed
as drums and guitars death roll each other on the
shore, but unfortunately the lyrical content and
vocal melodies compare unfavourably to the other
three instruments. On Mosaic, the lyrics are at
best repetitive, at worst, lazy, creating a
continual barrier between the listener and the
emotional resonance of the music. Perhaps, with a
little more lyrical imagination, we could have had
something truly worthy on our hands. æWhat Was I
Supposed To Do?Æ sums up the album, with the line
repeated endlessly in a tone that may have been
intended as defiant but ultimately comes across as
apologetic.
