Release Notes
About the band
TUMMEL is a klezmer/balkan/rockish 7-piece band based in Malmö, Sweden and
Copenhagen, Denmark. Right from the start in 1997 they won the hearts of both
folk and rock audiences, and has since attracted a growing number of fans
across Sweden, Denmark, the UK, Italy, Slovenia and Estonia. Due to their
reputation as a great live band, Swedish Television choose them for the show
"Concert of the week" with a full hour of televised Tummel Live. They have
also appeared live on Estonian Television and Danish National Radio on
several occasions, not to mention local stations in Siberia, Texas, Turkey,
Greece, Germany etc. etc.
What makes Tummel special is their ability to adapt to whatever kind of scene
or stage they are thrown upon. They have played every kind of venue from
small bars to big rock festival stages, and people seem to get a kick where
ever they set foot.
"Tummel" is, in Yiddish, the sound that arises from a totally unrestrained
party. ôEin Tumlerô is a guy hired by the host of the party to keep the
partying frenezy up, whatever the cost.
About the music
Tummel plays traditional klezmer and balkan music, but arranged in their own,
often untraditional way, and also write their own material. Although all
band members are strong instrumentalists, what really makes the crowd go
wild on a Tummel concert is their extraordinary capability as a live band.
The Tumlers spare no effort to give the audience a once in a lifetime
experience, leaving the audience gasping for breath with sweat flowing from
their armpits. As a reflection of the history this music has floated through,
the music involves elements of both extreme pleasure and extreme pain. But in
Tummel┤s case, the pleasure and joy is the first and foremost ingredient.
About Tummel
Tummel is:
pΣr moberg - saxophones
Former rock-singer wannabee who fell in love with folk in his early twenties
and picked up the saxophone. Although PΣr claims to be true to klezmer, he
has a very serious affair with Scandinavian folk music. Known as the
ôprofessorö of the band, who does a lot of composing for all kinds of groups.
Also has a degree in traditional Music from the academy of Malm÷, and works
as folk ensemble teacher both at the Highschool of music and at the Academy
of Music in Malm÷, besides playing with several other bands.
edin bahtijaragic - accordeon
While growing up in Bosnia, it was Edin┤s plan to become an architect, and it
was not until he came to Sweden that a real and passionate interest for the
music he had grown up with started to claim Edin. Now there is only one thing
in his head besides music: football! Has a degree in traditional music from
the academy of Malm÷, and also works as a music teacher.
annika jessen - clarinet
A vagabond and restless soul, and the natural focus of attention of the band
with her piercing and agile clarinet. After studies both in Stockholm, Pite,
Gothenburg and Copenhagen, Annika has settled in Malm÷, where she besides
Tummel has worked a lot with theatre music. Her newest passion is Brazilian
and African music.
tobias allvin - guitar and bouzouki
Speaking fluent Russian is only one of the many talents of this
punk-guitarist-turned-bozoukiman, who besides Tummel also is a member of the
arab-jewish peace project MEPO (www.peacemusic.dk) and the danish orchestra
Klezmer Zahav (www.zahav.dk). Furthermore he is the singer in the ecstatic
rockband Babian (www.babian.be). Tobias has a degree in traditional music at
the academy in Malm÷, and is together with Jonatan the one in the band with
Jewish heritage.
oivind slaatto - tuba
With only one year left of his studies at the Conservatory of music in
Copenhagen, Oivind decided to change career, and was accepted as a student
at the Academy of Industrial design instead. He still plays tuba, of course,
and is actually developing a whole new concept for the design of this
un-ergonomic instrument! Has received the Jacob Gade Award, the most
prestigious award for a young Danish musician.
jonatan aisen - drums
Raised on a diet of funk and rock, Jonathan only just became a regular member
of the band in January 2006, though he has previously toured with the band as
replacer. He also plays with Klezmofobia (a Danish klezmer band), ,and is
studying to become a music and maths teacher. Together with Tobias he
represents the Jewish heritage in Tummel.
andreas rudena - violin and guitar
Always looking for authentic traditional violin sounds, ôthe pandaö continues
to explore the Balkans for eredeti-style input into Tummels fusion. He has a
degree in traditional music at the academy in Malm÷.
