       Manchester's Akoustik Anarkhy has finally given birth to
       this debut album of diverse, often gritty material from
       those staples of the city's live circuit, Autokat. It's
       hard to pin down exactly where the essence of this band's
       sound lies: 'Dish Out' is a revisitation of pre-Britpop
       UK indie, then there's the reverberating Mogwai-like
       guitar trills of "Bowling". There's a genuine sense of
       variety to the way this album's been assembled - not just
       in terms of its writing but in its production. This is
       probably largely accounted for by the fact that the band
       have quite admirably undertaken responsibility not only
       for the recording and mixing of Late Night Shopping but
       even its mastering, which is a rare thing indeed.
       Consequently there's a disparity between the sound of
       tracks like "Innocence" and "Uber Patriot": where the
       former is a distinctly lo-fi dose of jagged new-wave pop,
       the latter is an altogether more cinematic sounding foray
       into instrumental post-rock. It's always nice to hear an
       indie rock record born on the streets of Manchester that
       isn't a slave to the ghosts of the city's recent past.
