Heathen Harvest
Starting with a static crackle and generator hum, what sounds like
raindrops falling on concrete and casette tape being jerked
violently through the tape heads, this 31 minute offering from the
prolific Damion Romero promises to be more than just another
generic noise release.
And it lives up to its promise. Similar in style to Daniel Menche,
with whom, unsurprisingly, Romero has collaborated with on
occasion, this is a seemingly bleak, minimalistic industrial
noisescape. Digging below the surface however there are a
multitude of seperate, self contained layers which eventually meld
together into a sonic vision of arc lit machinery endlessly,
patiently, performing the same task time and again, frayed metal
edges are ground down, sparks fly, liquids drip onto hot engine
casings and the smell of hot oils permeate the air.
Bleak, mechanical, autonomous and cold as it may initially appear,
there are the occasional hints of what could be voices, speaking
to us from beneath the background of machine noise, rising to an
almost comprehensible level but being swamped once again before we
can make out what, if indeed anything, is being said. These
elements add a touch of, for want of a better term, humanity to
the proceedings. We are not alone it would seem, but we are cut
off from whoever, or whatever shares this space with us.
Negative is an extremely well composed and constructed piece, a
soundtrack that wouldn't be out of place in an early David Lynch
film. Picture the opening scene in Eraserhead. Henry walking
across a pitted, rubble strewn waste land with a backdrop of
decaying warehouses and crumbling structures. Somewhere in this
region the sounds of Negative are still singing their mournful
song.
This then was my introduction to Damion Romero. My first taste of
his sonic vision, but hopefully far from my last.
Negative should appeal to fans of Daniel Menche, experimental
electronics and dark ambience. Those with a preference for noise
should also give this a try, whilst not noise in the truest sense
of the genre the sound sculpting presented here may well win a few
of you over.
All in all an accomplished piece of work, I look forward to
hearing more.
