I got a confession to make, if IÆve had a hard day at work the first thing I do
is swap my Prada's for some pumps. The 2nd thing I do is put on Smooth FM, even
if they got Gabrielle or China Black or æBreezinÆ by George Benson for the
hundredth time that week IÆm normally too knackered to care, I just want easy.
But last summer was all about a jingle they used to play for a Hed Kandi comp
which included a track called æThe City StreetsÆ by an unnamed group and more
than a few times, whilst driving home along the north circular I would have a
Waterloo Sunset moment. That song, as chilled out and soulful as air
conditioning in Cuba, used to change my state. I never knew until it appeared on
the ôUnderground Soulö compilation who it was by.
I can now tell you the song was by Positive Flow, a Jesse Reuben Wilson project
that features Donna Gardier (who released an acclaimed album æHomeÆ via Dome
Records in 2002). The album starts with the cracking brit soul of æNaturalÆ, IÆd
like to think if Soul II Soul were still around this would be the kind of thing
theyÆd create. Miss Gardier is let loose over a shattered beat and some aqua
lung jazz flute. Æ50,000 ft and RisingÆ begins like Curtis MayfieldÆs æLittle
Child Runnin WildÆ before working into a slick funk, rap artist Breis helping
Positive Flow out with sincerity. In mix like fashion the album grooves on into
the excellent æSunflowerÆ. Donna Gardier provides an effortlessly tender vocal
over a rhythm that reminds me of Jamiroquai & M-BeatÆs æDo You Know Where YouÆre
Coming FromÆ. The killer of the album to my ears is the insistant æRed Light
EmergencyÆ. Each verse building to a cool harmonized hook, Donna provides a
vocal that Mica Paris would have been proud of. Also worth a mention is the brit
soul of æDance Of The SoulÆ featuring Zena Edwards, sublime æCan U Feel ItÆ &
latin shuffle of æWhat U NeedÆ.
Released on October 16th the Positive Flow is sure to push in to the front of
brit soul, currently headed by the likes Omar & Hil St. Soul. When song
substance and soul is added to contemporary dance music it deserves to be
recognized. Even if it is being played on Smooth FM.
