The Bark Haze is primarily a guitar duo of GOWN (nom de
plume of one Andrew Macgregor) and Thurston Moore (Sonic
Youth etfuckingcetera). Auxiliary members have been know
to include Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, Virgin Eye Blood
Brothers, Cops et al). Their name came from a mis-hearing
of the radical early 70s R+B group the Bar-Kays and from
that moment the concept of mis-hearing and allegiance to
presenting the mis-hearing as some open-ended musical
course became The Bark Haze's identity. So far all
concerts have taken place in Western Massachusetts and
once in the confines of Cambridge, MA's Twisted Village
record emporium. They anxiously await their debut gig in
the UK at the Nightmare Before Christmas event curated by
Moore. As the heroic and potentially bonkers Carpenters
refrained We've Only Just Begun. Damn straight.

Okay I'm very aware that we all go a little weak at the
knees whenever we get even a whiff of Thurston Moore's
undergarments, but there's a good reason for that. The
man somehow manages to amaze and astound us with each
release he's involved with, and this latest emission
(which sees him team up with Gown) is yet more ammunition
for our Thurston-worshipping heavy artillery. "Total Joke
Era" is the Sonic Youth fan's wet dream; two electric
guitars, two amplifiers and a few effects pedals, that's
all and that's why I'm absolutely rabid about it. Ever
since I first started listening to SY there's been a part
of me that just wanted everyone else to leave Thurston to
his own devices for a while and let the man drone,
because as we all know nobody drones quite like Thurston.
The moments when the tracks break down into his signature
wailing solos, those are the moments that send shivers
down your neck and those are the focal point of "Total
Joke Era". Made up of two tracks, both of which sound
like unedited improvised jams, the two musicians wrestle
with each others guitar parts to come up with something
quite devastatingly beautiful. At times noisy, at times
dissonant and at other times hauntingly melodic you feel
like you're listening to a lost and buried Sonic Youth
tape, a discarded session re-discovered and re-mastered
for a new age. There's little else to say about this
crucial album other than that it's unmissably good - I
didn't have any idea this was coming and it's made my
week. Long live Thurston Moore, and may he continue to
release records as good as this for many years to come...
