the Spy, KentÆs Beaten Awake is aptly described as a ôdrunk Nick Drake with
electric guitarsö in the bio that accompanies its debut. The thing that stands
out about this album is the way it combines the textured post-rock music you
normally hear in instrumental acts like Tortoise or Trans Am with evocative
vocals. Jon Finley and Joel McAdams trade off on vocals and alternately recall
the raspy desperation of Paul Westerberg in ôBoat Shoesö and the spoken
word-like delivery of Lou Reed in ôItÆs a Bubble Bath of Sharks.ö As a result,
the album has a strange beauty to it that, come to think of it, is not unlike
the late, great Drake.
