Luo Lan, a woman with a poetic name and an
enchanting voice, evoked my thought of making a
record of equal poetry and enchantment.
Being different from the tremendous imitators of
Teresa Teng, Luo Lan knows for sure that simple and
pretentious imitation won't create that exact charm
and special flavor of Teng, which are developed on
her cultivation, experience and temperament. While
learning from, instead of imitating, Teng's
extraordinary command of the conception of the songs
and the unmatchable interpreting ability is the
rational way to achieve personal enhancement.
Singing out of interest, selecting songs out of
fondness, concerning only "how to interpret the song
well?instead of competing with others, Luo Lan's
attitude make the recording easy but demanding. I
was greatly impressed by her and freeness and
sureness, however, surprised by her pickinessí¬even
less perfection in a single word would start another
round of recording cause post editing commonly used
nowadays is considered as insulting to her works. I
couldn't help showing respect to her!
The Sound of Tubes
Warm, soft, sweet, apart from the mellowness of
wine, the sound created by tubes is enchanting to
you as well. That's why I have grown on this long-
forgotten recording instrument. However, Luo Lan's
voice also make me feel lost. Then a though occurred
to meí¬why not record the beautiful voice by the
instrument?
And Guitar
Only two wooden guitars and one electric guitar,
deployed in the shape of a triangle, were used as
accompaniment for this poetic album. With simple and
pure accompaniment of the guitars, the tender and
sweet voice of Luo Lan floated in the air. The
marvelous beauty of music and abundant emotion of
the artist are sufficiently presented.
Recording
Luo Lan, Haoran and me are engrossed in the
recording studio day after day during that period of
time. Again and again we recorded, compared and
discussed. After repeated comparing and monitoring
we agreed unanimously that the positioning and
directing of microphones should not be totally the
same due to diverse style and flavor of the eleven
songs recorded. In this way, we carefully adjusted
them based on different demands of the songs.
Generally, the depth of soundstage and integration
of vocal and musical instrument are highly valued
for slow and soft songs; while vocal quality and
lines are emphasized for bright and fast songs. This
is indeed a bald venture, the outcome of which is at
the hands of all music enthusiasts of course.
Bonus
After completing the whole recording that day, Luo
Lan was obviously excited. She sat at the front of
the piano and started to play. Actually that's the
first time I listened to her live performance though
I knew it before. Being greatly infected by the
natural and true emotion of her, I hurriedly laid
out the equipment that has been packed and recorded
the last one "Picking Betelnuts".
