Apparently 'The Ecclesia' are all under twenty years old, and
over the last few years they've been recording borrowed
instruments, sneaking into churches to record piano and
reworking their recordings over and over again. The result of
this hard work is 'Birdsong over the Interior Castle', a
surprisingly diverse mix of melodic electronics and delicate
acoustic instruments, an album which wouldn't sound out of
place for instance on the lovely Moteer label. The way the
band work is apparent from the outset, they apparently send
each other sounds digitally and work into them, like
audio-sculpture if you like, and this feeling is obvious in
the use of sounds and construction. It's no bad thing though,
and the tracks don't feel overworked in any way, they just
feel moulded very specifically, and this eventually enhances
the appeal of a quite peculiar record. Maybe it's the
songwriting or the overall structure but something has drawn
me to the sounds on 'Birdsong.', the three musicians have
managed to make a record which is neither electronic nor
acoustic, it's that glorious middle ground, a perfect blend if
you will. I suppose we're bound to see this more and more,
kids that have grown up with so many sounds around them,
making music which blends so much so expertly. Lovely stuff...
