       Originally commissioned by the Tel-Aviv Chamber Music
       Ensemble for members of the Israel Philharmonic
       Orchestra, this suite of music for bayan (button
       accordion, as played by Malkovsky himself) and string
       quartet takes in an extremely broad range of musical
       reference points and influences. First and foremost
       Malkovsky's work bears the kind of drama and harmony
       associated with traditional Yiddish music, but there's
       plenty of evidence of the kind of downtown avant-garde
       sensibilities that are so much a part of the Tzadik
       universe. The stirring 'Epilogue' to the disc, centring
       on Malkovsky's virtuosic bayan performance entrenched in
       grand, ominous string sweeps proves that above all else,
       this is extremely lyrical music coloured by a powerfully
       unsentimental romanticism.
