Floating out of Moteer with regal grace, El Fog's
'Reverberate Slowly' is a gorgeous collection of music
that perfectly captures the hinterland moment between the
still of night and blossom of dawn. Based in Berlin, El
Fog shares obvious characteristics with Jan Jelinek and
an evaporated Rhythm & Sound - wherein minimal elements
come together in a rich tapestry of clicks, cuts, hiss
and cloaked melody. Blessed with a barely perceptible
heartbeat, opening piece 'Mountain Dub' is a delicious
introduction to the El Fog aesthetic; as a deceptively
simple keyboard becomes submerged in a tidal wash of
vinyl crackle and throbbing static. Bruised with a mesh
of glitches throughout, 'Reverberate Slowly' is
thoroughly haunting without resorting to cheap tricks and
lazy atmospherics, as El Fog ignites a blossom of soft
focus digitalis and ground-down fragility to devastating
effect. Much more than the sum of its parts, tracks like
'Silent Soaring', 'Olive' and 'Out Woods' all manage to
capture a glacial tenderness that is smoky and bleached -
bringing to mind gloomy seascapes and midnight charm.
Seductive and thoroughly arresting, 'Reverberate Slowly'
is creased with charm and spectral dignity for an album
that is inventive, intelligent and utterly invigorating.
