Release Notes:

It's hard to quarrel with an album devoted to the
music of Wayne Shorter, and Rachel Z certainly has
the pedigree to pursue such a project. Having
co-created Shorter's masterful High Life with him,
she is well qualified to interpret and expand on
his lengthy catalog of high-quality jazz
compositions. Interestingly, for those familiar
with her primarily through her synthesized
electronics on that album, here she plays only
acoustic piano, and quite well. This trio sounds
bigger than it is, and that's because Rachel Z
fills the spaces with such masterful inventiveness.

Miriam Sullivan's basslines are fat and
intoxicating, while Allison Miller both keeps time
and makes time, opening up a familiar number like
"Footprints," and finding new subtleties to
explore. The listener who knows this material will
find these interpretations fresh and fascinating.
Numbers like "Pinocchio" and "Three Marias," though
horn free, are crisply reinvigorated. For those
less familiar with Wayne Shorter's music, On the
Milky Way Express provides an excellent primer.
