"strike a chord, there's nothing to it. folk."
     (unknown, definitely not madonna)

maybe it's just running in the family. being born in the europe of
the 1970s, one did not stand many chances to not get sandwiched
between the dominating musical currents of the time. especially
not when you'd been strapped in your safety backseat of the car,
the on-board-monosystem blaring out loud. the almost-too-innocent
hope of the singer/songwriters slowly subsided, most of it's anger
and social commentary getting more and more washed away by the
euphoric oomph of mainstream disco, while even the dodgiest
rockband added same spaced out electronic layers to their
     ego-trips.

so my father had served in the military-industrial-complex at the
time. which on the upside introduced me to the abilities of
computers at an very early stage and got him a year long working
stint at howard hughes in california. when he returned, another
main benefits was that big blue crate of records he brought. so
from then on, every night when he got back from fixing whatever
weird military hi-tech-nonsense, he lay down on the couch,
mumbling along toà well, of all places, country-music.

back then i did not get any of the words these men were squeezing
out of their tortured souls. and even if i had already spoken
english i wouldn't have been able to understand at that tender
age. most of the times bearing not more than three chords and the
truth, it wasn't exactly funky, but it sure as hell had a damn lot
of soul. above all, it had done one thing: it struck a chord with
me. a term i'm still heavily jealous of, since there's no proper
     german equivalent to it.

so when lars asked me to accompany the second edition with some of
my humble words, all those hours i spent listening to the first
edition of "folky" sprang to my mind. and how similar victor
davies or les gammas made me feel to back then when i was piecing
together little lego bricks, the same way i do these days with
chumps of words or audio on my powerbook screen. the timing seemed
to be sort of right, too. it was just a week after the great
waylon jennings had passed away. around the same time i found out
that another one of my heroes, labi sifre, is indeed still alive
and well working. granted, politically and racially and even
sexually both those artists appeared to be as far apart from each
other as one could imagine. but maybe the original highway man and
the fragile voice of "my song", they'd been something a lot more
precious (and here's another english term i'd always been jealous
     of): soulmates.

autsch, there it is. soulmates. because a lot more convincing than
all the musicological blablaism was the simple conjuncture of that
special someone just gone on a trip far far away. for two months,
that is. so yes, i indeed had something to say about sorrow, about
yearning, about that sweet and tender sensation caused by the
absence of the dear one you wish to hold so near (okay, ditch all
the pathetic crap. honestly i pulled faces as if it had been
raining for weeks and someone had taken all my favourite records
just to burn them right in front of me - loughing manic. to put it
short: i was quite miserable.) so yes, i indeed was up for some
     uplifting melodrama.

back home, i was a little surprised. it was only then that i fully
realised that even on the first edition of "folky", the
vocaltracks just worked as marks of orientation. that the strenght
of the album was the density of the moods and themes, the common
artistic version, the common appreciation of quality, of life as
such. that it worked a lot more like a traditional artist album
then a compilation, that it had a lot more in common with a loving
and cautiously put together tape for a close friend then a profane
     disc for the world.

i do no know exactly how lars managed to find all those people
again and talk them into the project, but it may poor down to
something very simple: in 2002, we are already far beyond all
those boring discussions where music is categorised via it's means
of production. if digital technologie accomplished one thing, than
it is to clear again the way for what truly matters: the music
itself, the moods and motion it is able to evoke. which is
something the amazing bunch of talent on heremanage just en
passant. feel free to bathe in their clichΘ-free narrations, no
matter whether you're cruising the coast in that stolen alfa
romeo, nice companion by your side or sitting on your couch by
yourself, sipping that olde irish single malt. no promotional
taglines as in "quiet is the new loud" needed, thank you very
     much.

once again, a lot of tracks will find their way from a
"folky"-compilation onto uncountable amounts of very personal
mixtapes, bridging the gaps between terry callier and blaze, paul
weller and dj spinna, freddie mcgregor and joni mitchell. and
since at least the latter is reportedly "she who never lies", you
should expect folky tracks which are everything but
one-dimensional. instead, prepare yourself for multi-facetted
music which celebrates life in it's entirety. if you finally hand
one of these tapes to people who are willing to acknowledge and
cherish this, if you really find those soulmates who strike a
chord with you - then no matter which ground you started from, in
the end it all might grow into something really major. even if a
lot of those songs in the key of like may be played in minor.

     torsten schmidt, cologne, march 2002
