In Wire Magazine's Top 50 of 2006...
Reanimator are a mysterious American duo and æSpecial
PowersÆ is their debut, and actually the only album that
will ever exist. With the master tapes heroically rescued
from the hurricane Katrina disaster last year, PortlandÆs
Kings of the eclectic Community Library have given these
bizarre tracks a home and given us a document of a time
when American electronic music went all Finnish. Already
championed by the likes of Philip Sherbourne, this is techno
music but not as we know it û with a hearty chunk of
influence coming from the glacial fellers up at Sahko HQ,
Reanimator manage to take those sounds and then turn them
into sub-Wolf Eyes style noise. No surprise then that the
duo also operate as part of Impractical Cockpit (IPCP) on
New EnglandÆs Load Records, but the fact that they manage
to blend this aggressive noise aesthetic with that of
precise dancefloor experimentation is simply astonishing.
Opening with the appropriately titled æClicks and Drones
MayàÆ weÆre treated to humming basses, blipping high pitched
synths and the all important cyclic drum machine loops. ItÆs
not exactly the first time weÆre heard this sort of sound
but rarely is it approached with such ease and more
importantly such abandon. Maybe because the duo are coming
at it from a different angle they have managed to make the
sound more involving, thereÆs nothing cold about Reanimator,
quite the opposite, the sounds are thick and warm sounding as
if they were recorded to cassette tape rather the familiar
precision of the silicon chip. Hitting the listener out of
complacency is the albumÆs second track æNo DancingÆ, which
focuses more squarely on ReanimatorÆs flirtations with heavy
distortion. The track is balanced around a crunchy overdriven
drum machine beat which stutters schizophrenically while
spring reverb splashes in the background. Any one of these
unusual jams would sit just as well in a dancefloor session as
in a mix of outre sounds from the most knowingly independent
cdr imprint, which is something I canÆt say about many records.
If youÆre looking for something that crosses genres and wins
the battle then Reanimator could be exactly what the doctor
ordered, just make sure youÆre ready for the onslaught.
