Californian label Attack Nine has been busy with
under-the-radar goodness for some time now, and we've
kept a close eye on them ever since the first releases
from label-bosses Freescha slipped out all those years
ago. This bumper double cd compilation collects up tracks
from their years of activity with friends and associates
and muscles them all together in one place. Where the
label started as merely a disparate part of the
burgeoning electronica movement they moved pretty quickly
into fresh directions, notably peaking with the first
album from Boomkat favourites Women & Children. The two
discs here are neatly split into 'Twilight' and
'Starlight', and the songs on each disc reflect either
the early morning or the late night mood quite
magnificently. Of course there's a specific sound here,
Attack Nine reflect the melancholy end of the spectrum;
spooky folk music, distant shoegaze, warm drone,
decomposing electronics - but the sounds have been neatly
rallied into two friendly groups for our listening
pleasure. Highlights come from The Surf, The Sundried
with a devastatingly beautiful Thames Valley-style
anthem, Freescha who contribute a different version of
the classic 'Moving', Winter Flowers who rustle up two
tracks of glorious pastoral folk music and of course
Women & Children, who weigh in with an impressive three
full tracks! To be quite honest there's not a dull moment
on here, and if you're looking for a way to avoid those
costly central heating bills then I can't think of
anything more warming. Simple, unpretentious, very cheap
and absolutely lovely - highly recommended.
