Release Notes:
Bassist and composer Alex Bellegarde is a prominent
player on the Montreal scene, leading his own
quartet as well as the Ensemble Jazz Urbain de
Montreal while regularly playing with several
Montreal-based Cuban artists. He's also a member of
Ohmz and the Vic Vogel Octet. A multidisciplinary
player with a broad imagination, he collaborates
regularly with poets, visual artists and actors.
Events include Jazz & Poetry, Espace Olibrius,
╔mergence ╔nergie, Espace Son and Live Painting &
Music. Bellegarde has also composed music for
several Montreal theatre productions: Cornemuse,
for Theatre d'Aujourd'hui (in collaboration with
Philippe Brault), Emmanuelle Blanche for Centre
d'Essai, La Tete Dans Les Nuages at Salle Fred
Barry and more recently Hamlet Machine at
Place-des-Arts.
The Alex Bellegarde Quartet won the 2005 General
Motors Grand Jazz du Jazz Award at last year's
Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. The
award is considered a springboard for Canadian jazz
ensembles and also includes a record deal with
Justin Time Records, hence this recording. The
label will market and promote the album in Canada
as well as in several other territories where the
label is distributed.
Festivals at which Alex Bellegarde has performed
include the Festival International de Jazz de
Montreal, L'Off Festival de Jazz de Montreal,
Francofolies, World Rhythms Festival, Festival des
Nuits d'Afrique, Toronto's Distillery Jazz Festival
and London, Ontario's Fiesta del Sol as well as
performances for Radio Canada and Bravo TV.
