murcof's debut album, martes, is a masterpiece of contemporary
electronic music, where, for once, soul isn't sacrificed for
technique. rife with a gooseflesh-inducing aura of mystery and
suspense, it draws together the apparently divergent disciplines of
classical orchestration and electronic minimalism. the result finds
lush atmospheric layers of strings and piano restrained by poised
micro-rhythms. martes hovers with effortless grace, intimating
untold, unapologetically spiritual depths.
mexico's singular landscape is submerged in murcof's sound. depicted
in the artwork are the rumorosa mountains, located between tijuana
and mexicali. the almost lunar range has a long whispered history of
rumoured ufo activity. itÆs this sense of strange, uncertain portent

sometimes it just doesn't add up. murcof is the recording alias of
fernando corona. he comes from tijuana in mexico on the mexican/u.s.
border (the film 'traffic' was set there), he was part of the nortec
collective of musicians whose members included panoptica. so you'd
think on the basis of that you'd pretty much have it figured out.
but throughout this, his debut, not only does he confound all
expectations. but in the process, manages to create one of the most
astounding albums we've heard all year.
the premise is a simple one; the fusion of electronic percussion
(digital) with classical orchestration (analogue). sure it's been
done before, but rarely has it worked so well as it does here.
taking cues from the germanic school of micro-rhythms; those
miniscule blips, clicks, whirrs and glitches that seem to form the
rhythmical backbone of all the best techno these days. he then
weaves this in and out of a subtle mix of pianos, violins and
numerous other 'real' instrumentation.
the nine tracks here are merely variations on that theme. but it's
within these parameters that the execution of ideas is perfected.
the fluctuation of basslines against the sweet violin melodies on
'maiz' are a revelation. 'mo' with its ominous piano chords and
clipped breakbeat could be perfectly suited to the next lynch movie.
but it's the final track which really impresses. the epic sweep of
'unison' allows the seperate threads of the analogue and digital to
merge. an electronic symphony to prove that the digital can
interrupt the classical at the click of a mouse button.
