Dogs do little to disguise the fact that they are clearly
influenced by The Jam and The Clash. That is their
strength û they embrace their influences rather than
trying to muddy them, and revive the spirit. The result
is that 'This Stone is a Bullet' sounds both familiar and
fresh. Okay, so on first listen it does sound like it
could be lifted from either of the first few Jam albums
but this is 'In The City' for a new generation - an urban
anthem for a modern London.
The rhythm section drives the track with triumph and
purpose, the guitars soar and scathe and Johnny Cooke half
sings, half spits for three raucous minutes. Unlike the
cod-mod of Ordinary Boys, Dogs actually get to the heart
of what made the bands they emulate so good and so
important in the first place û the passion and total
belief in what they were trying to say. Have that
conviction and the rest will fall into place. In that
sense, far from being a tame parody, this is as authentic
a tribute as you're likely to hear.
