Release Notes:
Sometimes the answer lies within silence. Sometimes the silence excludes choice.
Classically trained throughout high school and college, Static of the Gods lead
singer, Jen Johnson, certainly eliminated a choice when she lost her voice
before an audition with the Tanglewood Music Center Vocal Program. Forced to
cancel the audition into a program where there are no second chances, Johnson
strained to choose a new path. Within two hours of withdrawing from the
audition, her speaking voice returned and she realized she felt a deep sense of
relief. Although her passion lied in music, she lost her desire to be a
classical singer.
Sometimes the answer isn't what you expect. Sometimes it's simply meant to be.
The chemistry between Jen Johhson (voice, guitar, & keyboard), Mike Latulippe
(drums) and Ben Voskeritchian (bass & guitar) reinforces the inevitable
formation of Static of the Gods. Constructing power-pop gems gilded with a punk
and rock edge, Static of the Gods layer "sweet sounding female vocals over a
noisy rock rhythm section". The sound "creates an inviting atmosphere with its
enticing lyrics and intensity" to generate a unique brand of chanteuse-pop /
indie rock.
What started as a seed with Static of the Gods' EP, The Nature of the Wave,
blossomed with their full length record, Cycles Follow Signs, where they've
fully captured an authenticity, sincerity and distinctiveness hinted at on their
debut EP. On Cycles Follow Signs, Static of the Gods blend dark and light,
creating alternative pop songs that rock with big guitars, strong melodies and a
few teeth as well.
Exemplifying this,"The City is Closed" teases the listener with bouncy, upbeat
melodies while alluding to the problem of suburban sprawl - "The city is done.
Everybody wants a square of lawn and a private garage, a place you can be,
anonymously hiding out among the trip malls."
Johnson's submission "to drown in these shallow thoughts" directed a new
destiny, proving sometimes those thoughts just need to be heard.
