My new cd, ôThe Sky Is Rubyö, has just been released on the TUM
records label, and it consists of 6 of my compositions for the UMO big
band, featuring the outstanding soloists Juhani Aaltonen and Iro
Haarla. Recorded last April after a performance at Tavastia Klubi in
Helsinki, we succeeded in keeping it sounding live and interactive...
no click tracks here! There's a lot of space for improvising, and the
soloists (myself included) make full use of this freedom. Juhani has
always been a beacon of light to my generation of Finnish jazz
players, and his powers seem to just grow stronger with time. Here he
lets loose on tenor sax, and on one of the pieces he displays his
beautiful tone on alto flute. Iro gets a chance to play in a Monkish
vein, swinging in ways which will delight and astound her fans, and
she plays the harp gorgeously on a sombre, nostalgic ballad. UMO plays
with true dedication under the baton of my old friend Mikko Hassinen,
and the rhythm section really gets a chance to stretch out. All of it
is recorded by another old friend, Markku Veijonsuo, with whom I spent
an intense week in August doing the mixing and editing. I also owe a
big thanks to Petri Haussila, who trusted me enough to allow me the
leeway and decision-making necessary. This record will come as a
surprise to many of my listeners who haven't heard the jazzier side of
my efforts, especially my love for dense, beautiful chords.
