sonic process
a new geography of sounds
"sonic process," an exhibition initiated by the pompidou center,
will be presented in paris from october 16, 2002, to january 6,
2003. before that it will be shown as a "preview" at the macba in
barcelona, from may 4 to september 1, 2002, and afterwards it will
travel to the podewil in berlin and the serralves foundation in
porto, through the winter and spring of 2003.
"sonic process" is the first exhibition at the pompidou center in
paris dealing with the electronic music that we have heard over the
last decade. it is organized according to a particular geography of
sites, trajectories and intersections, without any claim to
exhaustively cover the entirety of sound-based art.
in a 1,500 square-meter sound studio at the heart of the center's
south galleries, "sonic process" presents installations by
musicians and visual artists/musicians, as well as a datasquare:
data banks of sounds, videos and internet sites. the performing
arts department is associated with the event, through the
programming of a series of concerts and performances over the
duration of the exhibition. conceived by the artists as "live"
extensions of their works or installations, the encounters between
musicians and visual artists in the "grande salle" and the
"electronic lounge" will enrich the exhibition proposals.
a book will examine the aesthetic, economic, political and social
regimes of electronic music today. it will be accompanied by a cd
including excerpts of the sound works carried out by the
participating artists.
the internet site is the informative and evolving part of the
exhibition. it documents the work of the exhibition artists and the
catalogue authors by video interviews and biographical and
bibliographical information. the "events" heading is a platform of
information concerning the recent activities of the artists before
the opening of the exhibition; it also announces the program of
concerts and performances that will take place during the
exhibition.
