░ Another Australian film released in a very good year for Australian ░
░ cinema is Suburban Mayhem. An anarchic black comedy about a single ░
░ mother Katrina, played by EMILY BARCLAY, who is narcissistic in the ░
░ extreme. Katrina hates the fact that her brother has been gaoled for ░
░ murder, she manipulates the world around her to get him out. But ░
░ it's when people, like her father John, (ROBERT MORGAN), think she's ░
░ gone too far, particularly as far as baby Bailee is concerned, that ░
░ Katrina turns feral. ░
░ ░
░ This exhilarating film, directed with suitable anarchy by Paul ░
░ Goldman, is so brave. It walks a dangerous line between comedy and ░
░ alienation and, because of the convincing performances, delivers a ░
░ perfect balance. You have to give credit to director and cast. They ░
░ are all just superb, but Emily Barclay is simply mesmerising as the ░
░ demon Cat with Michael Dorman, Anthony Hayes, young Mia Wasikowska, ░
░ Robert Morgan and Genevieve Lemon wonderfully solid around her. ░
░ ░
░ This is one of those films where I was sitting forward on my seat ░
░ thinking I'm just blown away by this. It's the first produced ░
░ screenplay by Alice Bell. And I'm not the only one that thinks it's ░
░ terrific; she won Awgie Award for it recently. ░
░ ░
░ DAVID: And congratulations to her. Look, yes, this is a powerful ░
░ film, indeed. It's about a young woman - Emily Barclay, the New ░
░ Zealand actress whom we saw in MY FATHER'S DEN. She plays Kat, who ░
░ uses sex as a weapon. I mean, she attacks with sex, I mean, she's ░
░ just an extraordinary character. ░
░ ░
░ MARGARET: Yes. ░
░ ░
░ DAVID: Really anarchistic and amoral. She just - you've never seen a ░
░ character on the screen quite like her. ░
░ ░
░ MARGARET: It's almost like she's got the potential to be, you know, ░
░ an iconic Australian creation, you know, that's going to go down in ░
░ cinema history, I think, this one. ░
░ ░
░ DAVID: I think the film starts off quite brilliantly with all sorts ░
░ of little visual jokes and things, which, sadly, are not continued ░
░ with as the film progresses, it gets a bit darker and the jokes tend ░
░ to - I would have preferred it if the jokes had continued. But, ░
░ look, I think it's a real achievement from all concerned, ░
░ beautifully acted. ░

░ MARGARET: For me, it is one of the best if not the best Australian ░
░ film of the year. ░
░ ░
░ Australian music kicks arse. Always has, always will. We're just glad ░
▒ that you're all on board for the ride. We here at OZM will continue ░
░ to shove Australian music right in your face proving that it's at ░
░ equal to and usually better than any other international act. ░
