early spring 1997: andrea parker got a phone call inviting her to
new york to dj with four decks and a bunch of sound effects
records with an ensemble performing compositions by philip glass,
one of the artists whose work had most inspired her music. within
hours of arriving at jfk the very next day, she found herself on
stage, blowing the dust off the speakers at the lincoln center
with philip glass in the audience. "luckily he said he loved it,"
grins andrea "that was definitely one of my best dj gigs." always
keen to veer from one extreme to the other, her intention on this
dj kicks release was to create "the kind of set i might play at an
electro club." here are some of andrea's favourite dance tunes,
spanning old and new electro, hip hop and techno. this collection
of classics is rounded off with "unconnected". she and david
morley have used old analogue equipment to create their own pure
sounds, mixing this with some of andrea's extensive sample
collection. "i'm always recording sounds, like from my kitchen --
aerosols and blenders, knives and forks and chinese chopsticks,
squeaky trainers on the lino." with this track, andrea notes,
