Written and produced by Fluke who are comprised of Mike Bryant, Michael
Tournier, and Jon Fugler (who does most of the vocals). Released as a
demo CD to/through Virgin Records 17.01.00.
Download this immediately. It's Fluke; you know it is great. "Liquid",
"Ykk", and "Nebulus" are MORE than worth your time and bandwidth.
So as it turns out Fluke have not broken up. If the date on this demo is
accurate then Fluke must have jumped right back in the studio after
finishing up their Risotto touring praxis to pump this out by January,
2000. This appearently is a demo CD to Virgin featuring possible ideas
and angles for a follow up album to Risotto. This would explain the wide
variety of styles Fluke covers on this CD. Shortly after this was
submitted Fluke supposedly had a fall out with Virgin and the album was
shelved. Fluke went label-less for a few years until being picked up by
One Little Indian recently. The new full length is schedualed to be
released fall 2002. It will be interesting to see which of these
tracks will show up on it.
Each track features vocals by Fluke's infamous mic-man Jon Fugler (except
for "Expo 00" which has vocals by Michael Tournier I believe). This demo
vaguely resembles an updated retune of Fluke's Oto album. "Ykk" runs a
wicked riff which flows into the bassline under a nice pumping tribal
drum sequence. Fugler chimes in with an assortment of catchy one-liners
every few minutes. Predictable but great. "Nebulus" reminds me a lot of
"Bermuda", one of my favorite tracks off of Risotto. It runs an eerie
assortment of clashing samples and cords which mix well with the
outstanding lyrical content. (You'll probably notice a little glitch in
the first second, it's an artifact of the CD. There are a few other
anomalies scattered around the CD that you must live with.) Fluke try
their hand at industrial with "Baby Pain" and almost lose a finger. This
track is uninspiring at best. Most disappointing of all are they lyrics.
Hopefully this is their last attempt at industrial. From the worst track
on the CD to the best track. "Liquid" sweeps you away with lazy breaks,
tight strings, and flowing lyrics (pun definately intended). This track
has commercial crossover and soundtrack potential written all over it.
Moving along to "Expo 00" we find a throwback to the early days of Fluke
with what I think is Michael Tournier at the mic. Very cool almost new
waveish sound. Closing the deal we have another experiment from Fluke by
the name of "Another Kind Of Blues". It's pop, it's jazz, it's trip-
hop.. what's going on here. Not a bad track just a bit unusual. Reminds
me of Fluke's 1989-1991 work with slightly updated production techniques.
By itself this is not a very strong CD but it IS a strong demo. I like
what I heard for the most part and am very eager to hear the full length
CD due out this summer. Also look for releases and mixes (like "Pray")
from Fluke under their alias of Syntax (or Dr. Syntax).
