This is a remastered 2in1-release of formerly released
Flanger-albums "templates (1997)" (tracks 1 through 9)
and "midnight sound (1999)" (tracks 10 through 17).
Additionally theres a bonus track (a flanger remix) taken
from "Gak Sato - Tangram" (track 18).
Way before Atom Heart decided to trademark his name and
attained temporary notoriety under his Senor Coconut
guise, Uwe Schmidt was regarded by those in the know as
the most innovative and consistantly evolving electronic
musicians of the era. Via his peerless Rather Interesting
imprint he released a seemingly endless barrage of
groundbreaking electronic releases that injected the funk
back into the machines and more or less invented the
whole DSP movement that would dominate electronic music
for the next decade. At the peak of his creative stride
he also joined forces with fellow German operator Burnt
Friedman and under the Flanger moniker dropped two
twelves for Ninja Tune's fledgling N-Tone sublabel,
records that were quite unlike any of the other
jazz-inflected releases the label has always been so
enamoured with, constructed out of a myriad samples and
containing enough musicianship to beguile even the most
cynical jazz purist. Take, for instance, the quite
remarkable track "short note with a few" - a sequence
that slips into life with nothing more than the sound of
record static popping quietly, growing in intensity and
structure and before you manage to really latch onto any
particular sound you realise that the mangle has turned
into an exercise in pure micro-funk. Listening to it
again after all these years the technological vocabulary
seems quite familiar and that's in no small part down to
Schmidt's pioneering production, on it's first release it
truly sounded like nothing else in the world. This
excellent reissue package on Friedman's Nonplace label
features all the "Templates" tracks plus the second album
"Midnight Sound" in its entirety , a bargain package and
one well worth pursuing for Atom Heart completists and
newcomers alike. Highly recommended.
