Drew Pilgram, the massively talented 27-year-old
singer-songwriter, is pleased to announce the release of
her debut album, Magnetic Sideways Pull. One of the finest
debuts you a likely to hear, Drew has concocted a
mesmerising set of songs that address, with often
heart-breaking poignancy, sadness, anger and bitterness.
Yet it is still uplifting, quietly strong and often smiles
sweetly.
Drew's sound draws on blues, gospel, country and r&b, yet
manages to arrive at a distinctive style very much her
own. Her songs are moving, with a directness and honesty
that is complemented by a subtle and understated
production. Her voice, soft, controlled and siren-like,
reflects the thoughtful and meditative bent to her lyrics.
The album was, in a remarkable individual achievement,
written, performed, produced and recorded entirely by Drew
herself in her modest home studio.
Drew's music has met with considerable acclaim. For
example, award-winning radio DJ Ben Mynott of Fluid
Nation, said: "Drew has delivered one of the best debut
albums I've heard in a long time. Beautifully written and
produced and with a gorgeous heartfelt vocal delivery;
it'll probably be the most accomplished album you'll hear
all year. Stunning."
But it nearly didn't happen. Drew says: "I was going to
give up on it and just move somewhere peaceful and warm,
where I could happily keep on writing songs and play my
guitar just for myself."
Before she could go off into the sunset though, she was
offered a record contract and the chance to immerse
herself in a 'lovely creative bubble', resulting in the
beautiful Magnetic Sideways Pull.
Drew had a peripatetic early life, moving around so much
that she doesn't feel like she's 'from' anywhere in
particular, though her musical roots are distinctly
Mancunian, having lived in Manchester with an extremely
musical aunt for some time.
She left home at 16 in search of adventure, and at 18
scored a job in a back street recording studio. She had
been writing songs since age 12, but it was during this
time that she developed her considerable natural talent
for writing songs so textured and warm.
She's done a lot more living, loving and developing since
then, to the extent that Magnetic Sideways Pull should see
serious success come her way.
