Rainy City Music was formed in Manchester during the summer of 1996
by brothers Irfan & Iftikhar Hussain and Cyril Lyons , Brazilian
guitarist Franco Ze joined a little later and this made up the core
personnel of the label. The label has released nineteen 12"
singles on Rainy City Music and 3 singles on Testing The Water and
a best of compilation CD their first seven years as well as
remixing a variety of artists including Blaze , Victor Davies ,
Roland Clark , Bah Samba , Tony Allen and many more.
The ideology behind releasing only a few recordings each year is to
build up a unique long term identity which goes against the heavily
saturated music market. Another important fact is diversity in
music which, is clearly shown by releases which have so far
encompassed house, disco, jazz, funk, soul, electro, techno,
afro-beat, Latin and Brazilian music. In fact some people think
that RainyCity Music is a jazz label, while others assume it is a
deep house label, 'I do not know myself and that makes me feel
good' enthuses Irfan about the label.
BFTP's original sounds like their tribute to the Chi-town Cajual
heroes with twisting disco loops and perfect bumpy beats. The two
other mixes from Rainy City cohorts City People and 20 Below go
deeper places with City People in particular turning in a dub that
has a classic Damier/Trent vibe.
