     Rapidly becoming something of a curate's egg amongst the ranks
     of faceless labels, Trunk has been on a gold-run; with 'Music
     For Biscuits - Lost Advertising & Rare Film Sounds By Mike
     Sammes & The Mike Sammes Singers' coming hot on the heels of
     'Fuzzy Felt Folk' and 'Bod'. Apparently salvaged from a skip
     outside Mike Sammes' gaff by Jonny Trunk himself, the music on
     'Music For Biscuits' is harmony-grouptastic - with music from
     detergent adverts through to ciggie jingles all flashing by
     with amazing grace. Given the state of tailored music on
     today's commercial breaks ("hmmm, Danone...") it's astonishing
     to hear the love and care that went into these recordings -
     with the Mike Sammes' singers weaving intoxicating and really
     complex harmonies around the relaxed instrumentation,
     resulting in an atmosphere that has you basking in some kind
     of utopian view of the domesticated 1960's. By no means a
     musical cash cow for the ad industry, Mike Sammes and his
     Singers were held in high esteem by their peers; appearing on
     'The White Album' as well as recordings by Sinatra, Streisand,
     Sammy Davis and the Rosemary's Baby soundtrack. Listening to
     'Music For Biscuits' it's easy to see why they attracted such
     a spectrum of contracts, as the likes of 'Ariel', 'TUC' and
     'Southern Sound' get their capitalist point across without
     ramming it down your throat. Accompanied by properly extensive
     liner notes, 'Music For Biscuits' offers a fascinating glimpse
     into a bygone era, and does so with charm, wit and just the
     right amount of melancholic pathos. Buy buy!
